Pritam Addresses Claims of BLACKPINK’s Jennie Imitating Alia Bhatt’s ‘Rocky Rani’ Theme

BLACKPINK’s Jennie recently released her new single “Like Jennie,” complete with infectious beats that have quickly captivated fans. Following the teaser’s release on March 5, numerous admirers praised the snippet in the comments. However, many Desi fans of the BLACKPINK star have expressed their discontent, noting that the song bears a striking resemblance to Alia Bhatt’s “Rani Theme” from the film “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.” In response to the allegations, composer Pritam has spoken out.

Pritam took to social media to clarify that Jennie did not copy his work, asserting that similarities in music are commonplace. He explained, “Rani and Jennie are names that rhyme, so a similar flow in one phrase doesn’t make it a copy. In music, minor similarities are inherent—whether through rhymes, phrasing, or even across genres. Instead of fixating on trivial details, it’s essential to appreciate the bigger picture. In today’s interconnected world, where artists utilize the same platforms, there’s no intention of copying one another’s creations. Composing a song takes substantial effort, and if an artist genuinely connects with an idea, collaboration is always an option.”

Pritam further added, “Music is a realm of creativity, individual artistic vision, influence, and at times, mere coincidence—particularly when artists are on the same creative wavelength. Rather than undermining fellow artists, it’s far more meaningful to celebrate their endeavors. I wish Jennie the very best with her new album.”

Meanwhile, following the teaser launch on March 5, the full track was released on March 7. The song features driving beats, along with chants of Jennie’s name, throughout the brief teaser, which many listeners found strikingly similar to Alia’s theme from Karan Johar’s romantic comedy, scored by Pritam. After the teaser dropped, a number of social media users in India voiced their dissatisfaction with Jennie’s new release.
