President Murmu, PM Modi, and Others Congratulate Rohit and Team as Men in Blue Clinch ICC Champions Trophy by Defeating NZ

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other distinguished leaders celebrated Team India’s triumphant victory in the ICC Champions Trophy final on Sunday. The Men in Blue, captained by Rohit Sharma, secured a 4-wicket win over New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Chasing a target of 252 on a slow, turning pitch, India made a strong start with Rohit Sharma aggressively targeting the bowlers, while his opening partner Shubhman Gill provided stability. Although New Zealand’s bowlers attempted to disrupt India’s momentum by taking quick wickets, including those of Gill and run-machine Virat Kohli, the middle order, spearheaded by Shreyas Iyer, helped stabilize the innings.

The match was intense, ultimately coming down to the last moments before India clinched another ICC title, just a year after the heartbreak of the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup final.

In a post on X, President Murmu expressed her congratulations: “Heartiest congratulations to Team India for winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. India is now the only team to win the trophy three times. The players, management, and support staff deserve the highest accolades for this historic achievement. I wish Indian cricket a bright future.”

PM Modi also took to X to share his pride: “An exceptional game and an exceptional result! Proud of our cricket team for bringing home the ICC Champions Trophy. They showcased wonderful performance throughout the tournament. Congratulations to our team for their splendid all-round display.”

Home Minister Shah praised the victory, tweeting: “A victory that scripts history. Congratulations to Team India on securing a stunning win in the ICC #ChampionsTrophy2025. Your fiery energy and dominance on the pitch made the nation proud, setting a new standard for cricketing excellence. Always keep shining!”

BJP national president and Union Minister J.P. Nadda added, “Champion of Champions. Heartfelt congratulations to the Indian Men’s Cricket Team for their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 victory over New Zealand in the finals. This win reflects the team’s determination and spirit of perseverance. Every player gave their all, creating a memorable victory. The entire nation celebrates today, and I extend my best wishes for your continued success.”

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also congratulated the team on X: “A phenomenal team effort has culminated in a glorious victory as the Indian cricket team lifts the #ChampionsTrophy! Brilliant performance by captain @ImRo45 and the entire team! Your achievement fills 140 crore hearts with immense pride.”

Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi expressed his delight: “Smashing victory, boys! Each of you has made a billion hearts swell with pride. #TeamIndia’s phenomenal tournament run, highlighted by outstanding individual performances and sheer dominance on the field, has been truly inspirational. Congratulations to our Champions!”

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin remarked: “A flawless campaign, a perfect ending! Congratulations to #TeamIndia on winning the #ChampionsTrophy2025 and kudos to New Zealand for their strong showing. Rohit and the team delivered an excellent campaign, a composed final, and a victory to cherish. Champions once again!”

In the final, Captain Rohit Sharma was the top scorer with 76 runs, while Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya provided critical contributions. The run chase of 252 appeared manageable on a pitch that lacked much turn; however, New Zealand’s consistent breakthroughs kept the pressure on India. Following Rohit’s dismissal after an explosive 76 runs off 83 balls, nerves set in. Yet, India’s formidable batting depth ensured a victory with an over to spare, despite New Zealand’s spinners putting up a tough fight.

Iyer scored 48 runs off 62 balls, while Rahul kept cool under pressure, finishing on 34 not out off 33 balls, helping India secure their third Champions Trophy title after victories in 2002 and 2013, thus cementing their position as the most successful team in the tournament’s history in a stadium mostly filled with Indian supporters.

This win is a much-needed lift for the Indian team and its fans, especially after their near-miss in the 2023 ODI World Cup at home. On a sunny afternoon, New Zealand’s innings concluded at 251/7, highlighted by half-centuries from Daryl Mitchell (63 off 101 balls) and Michael Bracewell (53 not out off 40 balls).

India’s spinners played a crucial role, collectively claiming five wickets on a slow pitch. Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy each took two wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja also contributed with one, setting the stage for the team’s consistent performance throughout the tournament.

Team India remained unbeaten throughout, defeating Bangladesh in their opening match, overcoming arch-rivals Pakistan, and beating New Zealand in their final league match before defeating Australia in the semi-final.
