Pradhan Responds to Stalin’s Letter to PM Modi: NEP 2020 Does Not Enforce Hindi in Tamil Nadu

Published

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan clarified on Friday that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 does not advocate for the imposition of Hindi in Tamil Nadu.

In response to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pradhan emphasized that the Centre conducts various competitive exams in 13 major Indian languages, including Tamil.
“The NEP does not recommend imposing any language on students in their states. It does not advocate for the imposition of Hindi in Tamil Nadu in any manner. This misinformation should not be propagated by responsible individuals,” he stated.

His comments came as a response to Stalin’s letter to PM Modi, in which the Chief Minister requested the Centre to release funds under the Samagra Shiksha scheme to the state without tying it to the implementation of the three-language policy outlined in the NEP 2020.

Stalin also contested Pradhan’s alleged remarks that Tamil Nadu would need to adopt the three-language policy to receive funding under the scheme.
The DMK-led Tamil Nadu government has consistently resisted the three-language policy introduced in NEP 2020, viewing it as an attempt by the BJP to impose Hindi on the state.
Nonetheless, Pradhan reiterated, “Prime Minister Modi’s government is dedicated to recognizing the language and heritage of Tamil Nadu.”
He further asserted that by not implementing NEP 2020, Tamil Nadu risks depriving students, educators, and parents of global and national opportunities.
“I understand and respect the sentiments of Tamil Nadu. However, we should not depend excessively on foreign languages. Our reliance on them is not the solution. Ignoring NEP 2020 means denying our students, teachers, and parents the chance for global and pan-Indian opportunities. Disregarding a student-centric, future-oriented policy is a step backward. Education should remain free from political influences,” he concluded.
