Ponting Explains Vyshak’s Introduction as Impact Substitute Against GT: ‘Shreyas Said, Just Get Him Out Here’

Published

After securing a thrilling 11-run victory over Gujarat Titans in a high-scoring match, head coach Ricky Ponting shared his reasoning for bringing in Vyshak as an impact player. He explained that captain Shreyas Iyer requested the medium pacer to deliver a couple of critical yorker-filled overs to help clinch the game.

Iyer was instrumental in the team’s success, scoring an impressive unbeaten 97 off 42 balls at a strike rate of 230.95, leading his team to a substantial total of 243/5 in 20 overs. Vyshak’s key middle-over spells effectively restricted GT to 232/5, securing a narrow win for Punjab Kings.

“While I was in the dugout, I noticed they needed 13 or 14 runs per over and communicated with Shreyas about the plan. He immediately said to bring Vyshak in; he’ll execute a couple of yorker overs and help us finish the game. Vyshak was definitely the game changer today,” Ponting remarked.

Reflecting on his impactful performance, Vyshak described the win as a surreal experience, saying, “Winning the game, especially in that crucial situation for the team, is an incredible feeling. It brings a lot of joy, allowing you to sleep peacefully at night. I learned a lot today, and it was a valuable lesson for me. Although I was just running around, I had no idea until we started bowling that I might be the impact player. I’m really thankful for this opportunity and thrilled to have contributed to the win.”

Punjab Kings are set to clash with Lucknow Super Giants next at Ekana Cricket Stadium on April 1.
