Political Showdown Over Kunal Kamra Shakes Maharashtra
Fadnavis stated, “While stand-up comedy is allowed, Kunal Kamra cannot say anything he pleases. The people of Maharashtra have identified the real traitor (‘gaddaar’). Kamra should apologize. This behavior is unacceptable. Comedy has its place, but targeting our Deputy CM Eknath Shinde with the intent to defame is not appropriate.”
He added, “Kunal Kamra shared the same red Constitution book as Rahul Gandhi, indicating that neither of them have understood it. Freedom of speech exists, but it has limits. In the upcoming 2024 assembly elections, the people have decisively sent those who betrayed their trust back home. Those who insult Balasaheb Thackeray’s ideology have been shown their place. Comedy is permissible, but derogatory comments are not acceptable; one cannot infringe upon others’ ideologies under the guise of freedom of speech,” Fadnavis asserted.
In related news, Maharashtra’s Minister of State for Home Affairs, Yogesh Kadam, indicated on Monday that the police are tracking Kamra’s whereabouts due to unsavory remarks he allegedly made about Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. He confirmed that action would be taken against Kamra according to the law, stating, “Kamra’s location is under surveillance, and we will proceed with strict action. It’s important to understand both perspectives.”
During a performance at the Habitat Studio in Mumbai’s Khar area, Kamra allegedly referred to Deputy CM Eknath Shinde as a “gaddaar” in a parody song, although Shinde’s name was not explicitly mentioned. The comedian’s rendition of the popular song ‘Bholi Si Surat’ from the 1997 film ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ has resulted in multiple FIRs against him, including one lodged by Pratap Sarnaik, the Maharashtra Transport Minister from Shinde’s faction of Shiv Sena.
Despite the backlash, Kunal Kamra reportedly stands by his remarks, with sources from the Mumbai police stating that he does not express any regret. While currently in Tamil Nadu, he has denied claims that he was paid by the opposition to undermine Deputy Chief Minister Shinde’s reputation, offering to disclose his financial records if required. He stated that he would only apologize if mandated by a court.
Meanwhile, threats have been made against Kamra by Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena members. After vandalizing the Habitat Studio, Shiv Sena functionary Rahul Kanal remarked, “This is just the beginning. Anyone who speaks derogatorily about our leaders will face consequences.”
Thane MP Naresh Mhaske, closely associated with Shinde, warned that Kamra would be unable to move freely within India. “Kamra is a hired comedian targeting our leader for money. He won’t be safe anywhere in India; Shiv Sainiks will ensure he knows his place,” Mhaske said, insisting that Kamra must apologize.
The opposition, however, rallied behind Kamra, condemning the actions of the BJP-led Mahayuti government for the deteriorating law and order situation following the vandalism incident connected to Kamra.
Interestingly, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar from the NCP voiced his support for dissent, suggesting that police intervention was unwarranted and that criticism should be expressed within legal bounds. “Differences of opinion are normal, but they should be handled without police interference,” he said.
Leaders from the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena lambasted the attacks on Kamra, with Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut criticizing Fadnavis as a weak home minister while highlighting the vandalism carried out by Shinde’s faction.
Raut defended Kamra, emphasizing the importance of freedom of speech and shared an old video of Ajit Pawar that he believes Kamra was referencing in his performance. He stated that the incidents of vandalism should be dealt with similarly to how property damages were handled in previous riots, demanding accountability from CM Fadnavis.
Raut also criticized the state’s law and order, suggesting that Maharashtra is being misrepresented nationally regarding safety issues, and called for action against those issuing threats. He urged that political figures should be able to handle critical commentary without resorting to violence.
Congress leader Nana Patole branded the attack on Kamra as an attempt to “ruin Maharashtra” and criticized the governance of Fadnavis, claiming that law and order had deteriorated.
Supporting Kamra, Rohit Pawar of the NCP noted that satirical commentary has always been a strength in political discourse, referencing past instances involving Shiv Sena leaders.
In response, Shaina NC, a member of Shinde’s faction, condemned Kamra’s performance as vulgar. “Calling Maharashtra’s most prominent CM and Deputy CM ‘gaddaar’ is not comedy; it’s vulgarity,” she asserted.
Additional complaints have been filed against Kamra, with Shinde’s MLA Muraji Patel demanding a public apology within two days, threatening repercussions for failure to comply.
Patel warned, “He must apologize to Eknath Shinde within two days. Otherwise, Shiv Sainiks will ensure he is not safe in Mumbai. If seen publicly, we will paint his face black.”
Furthermore, Milind Deora criticized the elitism he perceives in Kamra’s comedy and stated, “Mocking Shinde, a self-made leader, is classist arrogance. India rejects such entitled figures.”
As this situation unfolds, the political landscape in Maharashtra remains deeply divided, with strong sentiments on both sides regarding the boundaries of free speech and political satire.

75-Year-Old Man Marries 35-Year-Old, Dies Before Honeymoon
Uttar Pradesh: A 75-year-old man who remarried in search of companionship died barely hours after his wedding, sparking shock and speculation in his village.

The deceased, identified as Sangruram, a resident of Kuchhmuchh village in Jaunpur district, had been living alone after losing his first wife a year ago. With no children, he supported himself through farming. Despite advice from relatives against remarriage, Sangruram wed 35-year-old Manbhavati, a resident of Jalalpur area, on Monday, September 29.
The marriage was first registered in court, followed by traditional rituals at a local temple. According to Manbhavati, the couple spent most of the wedding night conversing, as Sangruram assured her that she would take responsibility for the household while he would “take care of the children.”
However, by the next morning, his health deteriorated suddenly. He was rushed to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The unexpected death has triggered varied reactions in the village. While some residents believe it to be a natural occurrence given his age, others have expressed suspicion about the circumstances.
Relatives, including nephews residing in Delhi, have halted funeral rites until their arrival. They have also raised questions about whether a police inquiry or post-mortem examination will be conducted before the cremation.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding further investigation.
