On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed that he views himself as the wealthiest person, filled with the blessings of mothers and sisters, which he believes are ever-increasing. Speaking at a public event in Navsari, Gujarat, to launch various initiatives on International Women’s Day, he underscored that honoring women is fundamental to national development, marking a commitment to women-led growth in India.

“Women are often referred to as ‘Narayani’. Honoring women is essential for a nation’s development. This is why, in pursuit of a developed India, we have embraced the concept of women-led development. Our government prioritizes the respect and welfare of women. We have constructed toilets for millions of women, thus enhancing their dignity, and integrated countless women into the banking system by ensuring they have their own accounts,” the Prime Minister stated.

He pointed out government initiatives such as providing Ujjwala cylinders to alleviate the hardships women face due to smoke, as well as extending maternity leave from 12 to 26 weeks. He also highlighted the abolition of triple talaq, which has been a long-standing demand from Muslim women, saving many from dire situations.

“Under Article 370 in Kashmir, women were stripped of numerous rights, particularly regarding ancestral property if they married outside the state. Since the revocation of Article 370, women in Jammu and Kashmir now enjoy full rights,” Mr. Modi remarked.

Noting the significant rise in women’s roles in prestigious positions across various sectors since 2014, he said, “There has been a notable increase in the number of women ministers in the central government, and representation in Parliament has also grown markedly, with 78 women MPs in 2019 and 74 in the most recent session.”

The Prime Minister highlighted the increased participation of women in the judiciary, stating that their representation in district courts has surpassed 35%, and in some states, over 50% of new civil judge appointments are made up of women. “India now boasts the third-largest startup ecosystem globally, with nearly half of these ventures backed by women investors,” he added.

“India is advancing in space science, with women scientists leading major missions. We take pride in having the highest number of women pilots in the world,” he stated.

While engaging with ‘Lakhpati Didis’, the PM reiterated the crucial role women play in shaping a progressive India. He drew parallels between the ongoing event and his spiritual encounter at the Mahakumbh, a celebration of maternal power. “Today is dedicated to women. Our scriptures honor women as ‘Narayani’ (divine). A developed India cannot exist without empowering women. I feel privileged to be among such inspiring women today,” he remarked.

During his visit, PM Modi also launched two new programs—‘Gujarat Safal’ and ‘Gujarat Maitri’—aimed at providing direct financial support to women and fostering their economic independence. Several funds were transferred directly to women’s bank accounts under these initiatives, emphasizing the government’s dedication to uplifting them.

He underscored the vital role of women in building a prosperous nation and encouraged their active involvement across various fields. “Today, we draw inspiration from the strength and resilience of women, which is essential for India’s developmental journey,” he concluded.
