Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the historic rail link connecting the Kashmir valley to the rest of India on April 19. He will flag off a specially crafted Vande Bharat train from Katra, the base camp for the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine.

As per reports, the train’s initial route will operate between Katra and Baramulla in North Kashmir. Valley-bound travelers arriving from various locations will need to change trains at Katra. Once the expansion of the Jammu railway station is completed by August, services to Kashmir will commence directly from Jammu.

Before the inaugural train’s launch, Modi is expected to visit the Chenab Bridge, one of the tallest railway bridges globally. This engineering feat is a key element of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. Following this visit, the Prime Minister will head to Katra for the train’s flag-off ceremony and is anticipated to hold a public rally before returning to New Delhi.

Top railway officers have conducted thorough safety assessments of the rail link. Recently, the chairman of the Railway Board inspected the Chenab Bridge and other key safety elements, subsequently reporting their findings to the Union Home Secretary.

The rail route features numerous bridges and tunnels, and its construction was both challenging and time-consuming. The USBRL project, which stretches over 272 kilometers, has been completed in phases. Notable achievements include the inauguration of the 118 km Qazigund to Baramulla section in October 2009, the 18 km Banihal to Qazigund stretch in June 2013, the operationalization of the 25 km Udhampur to Katra segment in July 2014, and the February 2023 opening of the 48 km Banihal to Sangaldan segment.
