PDP Leader Iltija Mufti Alleges Detention in Jammu Ahead of Press Conference

Published

on

Iltija Mufti, leader of the PDP, was detained on Sunday after returning from Billawar, where she had visited the family of Makhan Din. The 25-year-old had recently taken his own life following alleged police torture during an interrogation related to a terrorist attack that resulted in the deaths of four soldiers. The police have denied claims of torture, while both the Kathua District Magistrate and the police have initiated separate investigations into Din’s death.

In a video shared on X, Iltija mentioned that she was being held at the circuit house, questioning an officer about the restrictions on her departure from the premises. The footage showed police officers closing the gates to prevent her from addressing the press.

Iltija, the daughter of former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, expressed her frustrations on social media, stating, “Currently detained at Circuit House Jammu. All this because @JmuKmrPolice wanted me to cancel my 4 pm press conference. This is what Naya Kashmir looks like, while the elected government is preoccupied with a lunch in Delhi, ignoring the plight of human rights victims.”

Mehbooba Mufti also took to X to voice her concerns: “The act of visiting and comforting victims’ families has effectively been criminalized. The police’s actions against Iltija at the Circuit House, preventing her from speaking to the media, reflect an alarming trend that undermines our democratic rights as citizens. The current regime seems to equate democracy with merely holding elections and forming a government, disregarding the essential freedoms that characterize a true democracy. It’s strikingly ironic that while a minister from NC could visit Billawar with police support, Iltija faces punishment for her efforts.”

Earlier in the day, Mehbooba tweeted, “Iltija finally reached Billawar to meet the grieving family of Makhan Din, who succumbed to suicide after alleged police torture. It’s heartbreaking that she faced numerous obstacles and had to navigate as if she were a fugitive just to offer her condolences. The ruling party conveniently shifts responsibility onto the Lieutenant Governor, but as a conscientious opposition, the PDP will always strive to support the victims and their families.”
