Published

on

Mangaluru: Parents are advised to take extra care of children suffering from viral fever.

Doctors recommend giving children plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Small amounts of water or oral rehydration solution (ORS) can be given frequently.

Breastfeeding mothers should continue to breastfeed their babies more often. Coconut water, clear soups and other suitable fluids can also be offered.

Children should be allowed to take enough rest. They should wear loose and light cotton clothes.

Parents can keep the room cool and well ventilated. A lukewarm sponge bath may also help reduce body temperature.

Cold water and ice should not be used during a fever. The sponge bath should be stopped if the child starts shivering.

Children should not be forced to eat when they have a fever. Soft foods such as khichdi, mashed fruits and warm broth can be offered.

Paracetamol may be given to children if they are uncomfortable due to fever. The medicine should be given in the correct dose based on the child’s current weight.

Parents should not give aspirin to children or teenagers. It can cause a rare but serious condition called Reye’s syndrome.

Medical attention should be sought if the fever continues for more than three days. Immediate medical care is also needed if the temperature reaches 104°F (40°C) or higher.

A baby below three months old with a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher should be taken to a doctor immediately.

Parents should also seek urgent medical help if the child is extremely sleepy, confused or difficult to wake. Breathing problems, a stiff neck or a persistent purple rash also require immediate medical attention.

Signs of dehydration, such as very few wet diapers or crying without tears, should not be ignored.I can also make this shorter and more suitable for a TV news script or newspaper report.

Lifestyle: Plant-based foods are becoming popular as alternatives to fish. Several natural ingredients can provide a similar texture and taste.

Banana blossom is one of the popular choices. Its flaky texture makes it suitable for dishes such as plant-based fish and chips.

Jackfruit is another useful option. Its soft and stringy texture works well in shredded fish and mock tuna dishes.

Tofu can also be used as a fish substitute. It can be cut into fillets or sticks and then seasoned and battered.

Heart of palm offers a firm texture with a slightly salty and briny taste. It can be used to prepare plant-based seafood dishes, including mock calamari.
