Paranjape: Rohit’s Eyes Reflect His Unwavering Determination to Silence Critics

Published

on

India’s captain Rohit Sharma silenced critics regarding his recent form by delivering a stunning performance, scoring 119 runs off 90 balls. This marked his 32nd ODI century and secured a four-wicket victory for India over England in Cuttack, clinching the series 2-0.

Jatin Paranjape, a former Indian player and selector now serving on the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee, expressed his excitement at seeing Rohit back to his effortless best at the Barabati Stadium. He highlighted the significance of this performance in overcoming a rough patch and emphasized its importance ahead of the upcoming Champions Trophy.

“One could see that Rohit was determined to capitalize on the good start, not just for himself but more importantly for the team, ensuring they secured the series win,” said Paranjape

“In addition to his usual elegance, Rohit’s eyes showed a steely resolve to prove his critics wrong ahead of the critical Champions Trophy campaign,” he added in an interview with IANS on Monday.

During the Cuttack match, India also handed wrist-spinner Varun Chakaravarthy his ODI debut, following his impressive performance in the T20I series against England (14 wickets) and his 18 wickets for Tamil Nadu in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Rohit had suggested that Varun was being considered for a late addition to the Champions Trophy squad, and the wrist-spinner’s tidy figures of 1 for 54 over ten overs strengthened his case.

Paranjape, who co-founded KheloMore, praised Chakaravarthy’s key strengths: his precision and the pressure he enforces on batters. He expressed that he would be surprised if Chakaravarthy doesn’t secure a spot in India’s final Champions Trophy squad, which has a deadline of February 12.

“Varun Chakravarthy has two significant strengths: his accuracy, as most of his deliveries are tightly clustered, and his ability to give batters little to no time to play aggressive shots. In addition, he has two or three variations that international batsmen are still adjusting to,” he noted.

“This period is like a honeymoon for him in international 50-over cricket. However, I believe he possesses the intelligence to expand his skill set and keep batsmen guessing as his career evolves. I see him as a significant asset for India, and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t make the Champions Trophy squad,” Paranjape concluded.

IPL 2026 : In a dramatic IPL 2026 clash, Royal Challengers Bengaluru player Tim David has landed in controversy for allegedly making an obscene gesture after his team’s thrilling win against Mumbai Indians.

The incident took place during the 54th match of the Indian Premier League in Raipur. Batting first, Mumbai Indians scored 167 runs in 20 overs and set a competitive target for RCB.

While chasing the target, Royal Challengers Bengaluru needed 15 runs in the final over. The match went down to the last ball, where RCB required two runs for victory. Rasikh Dar helped the team secure a thrilling win in the final delivery.

Soon after the victory, Tim David, who was in the dugout, was seen allegedly showing his middle finger towards the Mumbai Indians camp during the celebrations. The video of the incident quickly went viral on social media and triggered criticism from cricket fans.

Reports suggest that match officials could take disciplinary action against the Australian batter. Under the ICC Code of Conduct, obscene or offensive gestures are considered a serious offence.

Similar incidents have happened in the past as well. In 2012, Virat Kohli was fined 50 percent of his match fee for showing the middle finger to spectators during a match in Sydney.

Cricket is widely known as a “gentleman’s game,” and players are expected to maintain discipline and respect on the field. Tim David’s celebration has now sparked debate among fans and experts about sportsmanship in modern cricket.

Sports: Lucknow Super Giants’ captain Rishabh Pant faced criticism after a failed Super Over decision against Kolkata Knight Riders. LSG sent Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram to bat, with Pooran on strike against Sunil Narine.

Pooran was bowled on the first ball, leading to heavy criticism from fans. Many questioned the decision, especially because Narine had earlier troubled Pooran in a past Super Over.

LSG coach Justin Langer defended the move. He said the team trusted Pooran as he has faced Narine many times and has a strong record against him. He added that teams must back their best players even in difficult moments.

Langer also said Pooran is one of the best T20 players in recent years but is currently low on confidence. He assured that the team is working hard to help him regain form
