Panambur: Pothole Claims Life of Two-Wheeler Rider

Mangaluru: In a tragic accident near Baikampady in Panambur on the national highway, a scooter skidded and overturned after hitting a pothole. As a result, the rider fell onto the road and was run over by a tanker, leading to one death and serious injuries to another.

The deceased has been identified as Ashraf (36), a resident of Ashraya Colony near Surathkal. Shahil (35) from Mulki sustained severe injuries and is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital. The incident occurred late Monday night.

Large potholes have formed at several places along the national highway from Kuloor to Surathkal, severely damaging the road. The scooter being ridden by Ashraf reportedly hit a pothole near Baikampady, causing the front tire to get stuck and the vehicle to overturn. Ashraf fell on the road and was run over by a tanker approaching from behind, resulting in fatal injuries.

Ashraf was a well-known figure in Surathkal, engaged in flower trading, hotel, and other businesses. He was known for helping others, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when he distributed relief kits. The Mangaluru North Traffic Police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.

Young Woman Dies by Suicide After Jumping into River

Mangaluru: A tragic incident was reported at Gurupura, on the outskirts of Mangaluru, on Monday.A 20-year-old woman died by suicide after jumping into the Gurupura River.

The deceased has been identified as Navya, a resident of Kodepalla near Moodbidri.Navya had arrived at the Gurupura bridge on a scooter along with her female friend in the afternoon.

According to police, Navya stopped the scooter near the bridge and told her friend that she was going to jump into the river. She then jumped into the water. Her friend tried to hold her hand and pull her back, but failed to save her.

After receiving information, police and fire and emergency services rushed to the spot. Fire brigade personnel later recovered the body from the river.

The incident took place under the jurisdiction of the Bajpe police station.

The exact reason for the suicide is not yet known. Police suspect that a failed love affair could be the reason. An investigation is underway.

Padma R. Shet passes away after brief illness

Mangaluru: Padma R. Shet (76) passed away after a brief illness.She died at a private hospital in Mangaluru.

She was the wife of late M. Raghunath Shet.He was a partner of the prestigious S. L. Shet Jewellers and Diamond House on K. S. Rao Road, Mangaluru.

Padma R. Shet was the mother of Prashanth Shet of S. L. Shet Jewellers.She was well known in the Daivajna Brahmin community.She was respected for her simple and graceful personality.

She is survived by her sons M. Prashanth Shet, M. Hemanth Shet, and M. Nishanth Shet.She is also survived by her daughter Veena D. Shet.Many relatives and friends mourn her demise.Her last rites will be held today.

The funeral will take place at her residence, ‘Lakshmisadana’, Gandhinagar, Mannagudda, Mangaluru.

Two Inter-State Vehicle and Chain Snatchers Arrested

Mangaluru: Mangaluru city police have arrested two accused involved in inter-state vehicle theft and chain snatching cases.

The arrested persons are Faisal alias Thota Faisal and Nithin Kumar.Police have recovered a gold chain worth about ₹1.20 lakh from the accused.They also seized a bike worth ₹45,000 used for committing the crimes.

A complaint was registered at Kadri Police Station on December 12.The complaint stated that a bike was stolen from the parking area of Sri Hari Complex at Yeyyadi.

Based on specific information, Kadri crime staff traced the suspects on December 16.Both accused were taken into custody and questioned.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to a chain snatching case.The incident occurred on December 13 under Bhatkal Rural Police Station limits.They had snatched a gold chain from an elderly woman, Honnamma Mahadeva Naik, and fled.

Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy confirmed the arrests.He said the gold chain and the bike were recovered from the accused.

Police also stated that several cases are already registered against the accused in different police stations.
