Operation PRAGHAT: STF Assam Arrests Key ABT Operative in Chennai During Crackdown on Extremist Networks
The operation resulted in the arrest of Abu Salam Ali, a resident of Khudigaon Part-II near the Bilasipara Police Station in Dhubri, Assam. His arrest took place within the jurisdiction of the Semmencherry Police Station in Chennai, representing yet another significant stride in STF Assam’s ongoing efforts to dismantle extremist networks.
Ali is an active member of the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) and Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen and had been evading capture since December 17, 2024. His involvement came to light during investigations focused on radical networks, which have led to various arrests in the Kokrajhar and Dhubri districts of Assam. Reports indicate that Ali played a key role in coordinating extremist activities with collaborators Nur Islam Mandal and Shahinur Islam, with the goal of reinforcing radical groups and jeopardizing national security.
His arrest exemplifies a broader crackdown on a network of radical elements attempting to broaden their influence within Assam and beyond. In recent years, both the Assam Police and the STF have ramped up efforts to combat jihadi activities, resulting in numerous arrests connected to ABT and other outlawed organizations.
The Ansarullah Bangla Team, a terrorist group based in Bangladesh, has drawn the attention of intelligence agencies for its involvement in cross-border terror operations. Its connection to Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), known for executing attacks in India, raises significant concerns regarding its activities within Assam.
Assam has seen a number of operations targeting extremist modules in recent times, with arrests occurring across districts such as Barpeta, Dhubri, Bongaigaon, and Goalpara. Many of these operatives have utilized madrasas and sleeper cells to disseminate radical ideology and recruit individuals for extremist initiatives.
