Seema Kapoor, the ex-wife of late actor Om Puri, recently shared her thoughts on their turbulent marriage and the difficult final years of his life. She expressed that Puri did not deserve the struggles he faced. Their marriage, which lasted just two years, was marked by challenges, including Om’s affair during Seema’s pregnancy. Before his passing, the actor reconciled with Seema and offered his apologies.

In an interview with Galatta India, Seema reflected on the last decade of Om Puri’s life, stating, “The final 10 years were filled with tragedy. He truly didn’t deserve it; he had labored greatly throughout his life.” She went on to emphasize his dedication and resilience, recounting his difficult beginnings—riding a bicycle to school and working in a dhaba to make ends meet. Despite facing setbacks, such as a broken promise that almost derailed his admission to the prestigious FTII, Puri persevered and ultimately achieved international recognition.

Seema asserted that it is unfair to tarnish his legacy now, especially since she chose to keep their issues private during their relationship. “He cannot defend himself anymore. I never aired our problems publicly. I made the choice to forgive him when he apologized. It takes great courage to apologize, and if I didn’t speak poorly of him then, why should I now?” She also recounted a moment when Om reached out to her for support. “When he recovered, he expressed his worries about being alone during his later years, feeling neglected. My brother, Annu Kapoor, cautioned me to be cautious, suggesting he just wanted someone to care for him. His declining health led him into depression, which he struggled with mentally and physically.”

As their discussion continued, Seema emphasized that Om Puri should be seen with compassion rather than condemnation. “He deserves empathy, not criticism. The hardships he faced in his last ten years were devastating. He was subjected to court cases and forced to associate with dangerous individuals—just imagine the toll that took on him.”

Om Puri and Seema were married from 1991 to 1993, during which he had an affair with journalist Nandita Puri. After their split, he married Nandita, and they had a son together named Ishaan.
