NMPA Sets Up Dedicated Feeding Zones for Stray Dogs After Supreme Court Order

Published

on

Mangaluru: After recent national discussions about stray dog attacks, the Supreme Court directed all states to create a proper system for feeding stray dogs. Following this order, the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA), a central government enterprise, has set up dedicated feeding zones for stray dogs inside its premises.

NMPA has identified specific spots inside the port area where food will be provided to the dogs every day. A total of six to seven feeding points have been created inside the main campus, and around 20 feeding zones have been marked in the township area. These places are used only for feeding the dogs.

Not only dog lovers, but even the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel stationed inside the port are helping by providing food. The dogs are fed three times a day — in the morning, afternoon, and evening. For this purpose, a separate shed has been built, and bowls for food and water have been placed there.

Because of this organized system, food is no longer thrown around, and dogs do not have to run everywhere searching for food. This has reduced fights, chasing, and disturbances among the dogs. They now stay peacefully in their designated areas.

NMPA’s outgoing chairman, Venkataramana Akkaraju, has taken special interest in implementing the Supreme Court’s order. Members of the public have appreciated this initiative. Plans are also being made to continue this feeding system permanently.

The care of the dogs has been assigned to Animal Care Trust, Shaktinagar, Mangaluru. NMPA has signed an agreement with the trust for this purpose.

NMPA has also provided a Bolero vehicle free of cost to rescue any injured animals, including dogs, during accidents. In addition, the authority has opened a cowshed for stray cattle that roam the streets. This cowshed has been functioning for the past eight months and currently houses around 60 cows. Cattle feed is supplied from Hassan.

Through these social welfare activities, NMPA is earning appreciation and gaining a positive reputation across the coastal region.
