Nitish Visits Maner Dargah Amidst Muslim Confusion Over Waqf Bill Silence

Published

on

On Sunday, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar visited the historic Maner Sharif Dargah in Patna to commemorate the 756th Urs celebrations of the revered Sufi Saint Makhdoom Shah Kamaluddin Ahmed Yahya Maneri. The in-charge of Maner Sharif Khanqah, Syed Shah Tariq Suharwardi Ainayatullah Firdausi, along with other devotees, warmly welcomed the Chief Minister and presented him with a cap and a handkerchief as a mark of respect.Taking time to immerse himself in the spiritual ambiance, Kumar offered a ‘chadar’ with deep reverence and prayed for the peace, development, and prosperity of Bihar.

This visit to Maner Sharif Dargah, which symbolizes Bihar’s Ganga-Jamuni culture and communal harmony, highlights his commitment to promoting religious unity and advancing the interests of the state. However, the visit carries particularly significant weight given the current political climate.

There is discontent among the Muslim community in Bihar regarding the Janata Dal (United)’s stance on the proposed Waqf Amendment Bill, perceived as a move by the central government to exert control over mosques and dargahs. Community leaders have criticized the bill, viewing it as an attempt to undermine the Waqf system and marginalize Muslims further.

Rajiv Ranjan Singh, also known as Lalan Singh, a close associate of Kumar and a Union Minister, has been notably supportive of the bill among BJP allies. While certain Muslim leaders within the JDU have openly expressed their opposition, others have emphasized the necessity to address the concerns of the Muslim community before the bill is finalized.

Kumar’s silence on this contentious issue has left many in the Muslim community perplexed, especially since they have historically supported the JDU due to its alliance with the BJP. Recently, a leader from the RJD placed large hoardings in Patna accusing Kumar of betraying the Muslim community concerning the Waqf Amendment Bill, a sentiment that seems to be growing among ordinary Muslims.

Veteran journalist and political analyst Navendu noted that while former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav had once been the most favored political figure among Muslims, today, Nitish Kumar stands as their top choice. His genuine efforts to uplift the Muslim community have earned him considerable respect; however, his ongoing silence regarding the Waqf Bill could potentially jeopardize his standing among voters.
