New Delhi: In a major step to enhance road safety and provide immediate support to accident victims, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the launch of a cashless treatment scheme on Tuesday. The scheme ensures treatment for road accident victims within the first 24 hours of an incident, along with financial compensation of ₹2 lakh for families of deceased hit-and-run victims.

“We have introduced a new scheme for cashless treatment. Within 24 hours of an accident, once the information reaches the police, we will cover the expenses for a seven-day treatment period or up to a maximum of ₹1.5 lakh for the victim,” Gadkari said during the announcement.

The cashless insurance scheme, which has already benefitted 6,840 people during its pilot phase in states such as Assam, Chandigarh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Puducherry, and Haryana, is expected to be rolled out nationwide by March 2025.

“We aim to save 50,000 lives annually by ensuring timely treatment during the golden hour,” the minister added.

New Safety Measures for Vehicles

In addition to the cashless treatment scheme, Gadkari unveiled three mandatory technology-based safety systems for buses and trucks:

  1. Audio Warning Systems: Alerts drivers if they are at risk of falling asleep.
  2. Electronic Stability Control: Prevents rollovers and skidding.
  3. Automatic Emergency Braking Systems: Activates when poor steering control is detected.

To further enhance road safety, the ministry is also exploring Aadhaar-based or similar technology solutions to ensure commercial drivers do not exceed eight hours of driving per day.

Rewards for Good Samaritans

The government plans to increase the reward for Good Samaritans who assist accident victims from the current ₹5,000. This initiative, along with the expanded scheme, is aimed at encouraging timely aid and reducing fatalities on Indian roads.

The new measures reflect the government’s commitment to tackling India’s high rate of road accidents and fatalities, which have been a persistent concern.
