NIT-Silchar Professor Suspended Following Sexual Harassment Allegations Facing Backlash

Published

D. Koteswara Raju, an assistant professor at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar, has been suspended following serious allegations of sexual harassment against a female student on campus. This incident has incited significant outrage among the student body, leading to widespread protests demanding decisive action against the accused professor.

According to a handwritten note from the victim, Raju allegedly assaulted her in his office under the guise of discussing her unsatisfactory grades. The survivor recounted that he inappropriately touched her thighs, belly, neck, and lips, forcibly holding her while making lewd comments about her body. He also suggested that her grades could be “managed” if she acquiesced to his demands. Fortunately, she managed to escape when a friend called her, and the alarming incident was subsequently shared on social media.

The revelation of this incident quickly spread, prompting the Assam Police to acknowledge and assure that action would be taken. However, despite the gravity of the accusations, no formal police complaint has been filed to date. The campus of NIT Silchar has witnessed uproar as students demand Raju’s dismissal and legal repercussions against him, with many asserting that this is not an isolated case. Allegations have emerged that Raju was involved in a similar instance of sexual harassment back in 2021, which was dismissed due to insufficient evidence and the complainant’s absence during proceedings.

In response to mounting pressure, the NIT administration suspended Raju and has initiated an investigation via the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act. Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta confirmed that they are working closely with the institution to gather evidence and assess the situation, though the lack of a formal complaint poses a significant obstacle for law enforcement.
