New Violence Erupts Between Zomi and Hmar Tribes in Manipur Despite Ongoing Peace Efforts
Reports indicated that gunfire was exchanged during the incident, though the identity of the shooters remains uncertain. Security forces encountered significant difficulties in managing the unruly groups, who were involved in acts of vandalism during the unrest.
Since May 2023, Manipur has been plagued by ethnic tensions, particularly between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups, resulting in over 250 fatalities and the displacement of thousands. As violence escalated, the central government enforced President’s rule on February 13, 2024, after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned, leaving the state assembly in suspended animation until its term expires in 2027.
The recent conflict between the Zomi and Hmar tribes is a continuation of Manipur’s strife. Tensions flared when Hmar Inpui general secretary Richard Hmar was attacked by Zomi individuals after a near-miss incident involving his vehicle and a Zomi motorcycle rider. This seemingly minor confrontation spiraled into broader violence, leading to a curfew being instituted in the area the following day.
In retaliation to the assault on Richard Hmar, the Hmar Village Volunteers (HVV) initiated a total shutdown in the Pherzawl and Jiribam districts, with Pherzawl largely populated by the Hmar community and Jiribam home to various ethnic groups, primarily Meiteis.
On Tuesday, a peace agreement was brokered between Hmar Inpui and the Zomi Council, resulting in the decision to lift the shutdown and halt further disruptive activities in the region.
