Neetu Chandra Files PIL Against Honey Singh’s ‘Maniac’: “Objectifies Women and Normalizes Vulgarity”

Actress Neetu Chandra is in the spotlight for her bold criticism of rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh’s latest song, ‘Maniac’. She has accused the track of promoting vulgarity and disrespecting women. In response, the Bollywood star has filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Patna High Court, calling for modifications to the song’s lyrics.

Chandra, renowned for her roles in films like ‘Garam Masala’ and ‘Traffic Signal’, is not holding back in her petition. She condemns the song for its “overt sexualization” and reducing women to mere “sex objects” — a stereotype that the entertainment industry has faced criticism for over the years.

A particular point of contention for Chandra is the use of Bhojpuri in the song. As someone who has produced respected Bhojpuri and Maithili films, she argues that such songs degrade a language and culture close to her heritage. She contends that tracks like this undermine women’s empowerment and have a detrimental influence on the youth in Bihar.

In an interview with India TV, Chandra shared her concerns about the impact of such music on women’s daily lives. “These vulgar Bhojpuri and Hindi songs make it challenging for girls and women to walk confidently in Bihar. Many are forced to keep their heads down. Some women can’t even enjoy watching TV at home with their families because of these tracks,” she stated.

Chandra went further to question why the government can impose a ban on alcohol to safeguard women from domestic violence, yet fails to take action against degrading songs. “If the government can ban liquor for women’s protection, why can’t they prohibit vulgar songs that harm young girls and society at large?” she asked.

The PIL names Honey Singh, whose real name is Hirdesh Singh, along with lyricist Leo Grewal and Bhojpuri artists Ragini Vishwakarma and Arjun Ajanabi as respondents. Chandra is urging the court to intervene and amend the song’s lyrics.

The case is slated for a hearing in March. Honey Singh has frequently faced backlash for his provocative lyrics, and this legal challenge may reignite the ongoing discourse on misogyny in music.
