NCW Responds to Ranveer Allahbadia, Urges Action Against Obscene Content

Published

on

The National Commission for Women (NCW) is demanding swift regulation of explicit content on social media and streaming services. This call to action follows the uproar over comments made by YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia during the show “India’s Got Latent.”Vijaya Rahatkar, the NCW Chairperson, has reached out to Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, urging the implementation of stringent censorship and content moderation measures in response to Allahbadia’s remarks.

The Commission pointed out that Allahbadia’s statements, along with similar content online, breach several legal statutes, including:

– Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act
– Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS)
– Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act
– Information Technology (IT) Act

In its statement, the NCW emphasized that such content fosters harmful stereotypes and threatens the dignity and safety of women and minors. The Commission is urging the Ministry to establish explicit guidelines to prevent platforms from hosting inappropriate material, requesting updates on the steps taken in this regard.

The controversy gained momentum when Allahbadia posed an inappropriate question to a contestant on comedian Samay Raina’s show: “Would you rather watch your parents… or join in once and stop it forever?” This remark quickly went viral, leading to widespread criticism on social media.

Many condemned Allahbadia for his choice of words, while others demanded stricter regulations on digital content. Complaints were filed with the Mumbai Commissioner and the Maharashtra Women’s Commission, citing the show’s offensive language and derogatory commentary about women. Social media influencer Apoorva Makhija, comedian Samay Raina, and the producers of “India’s Got Latent” were also mentioned in these complaints.

In response to the backlash, Allahbadia released a one-minute apology video on X, acknowledging his mistake.

“I shouldn’t have said what I said on India’s Got Latent. I’m sorry,” he stated, admitting that his comments were both inappropriate and unfunny. He further reflected on his lapse in judgment, saying, “Comedy is not my forte. It wasn’t cool on my part.”

Allahbadia also addressed his influence on young viewers, taking responsibility for his words. “I don’t want to be the kind of person who takes that responsibility lightly. Family is the last thing I would ever disrespect.” Additionally, he urged the show’s producers to edit out the insensitive segments of the episode, asking, “I hope you can forgive me as a human being.”
