Nagpur Riots: 14 Additional Arrests Made, Total Arrests Rise to 105; Three New FIRs Filed
The police have filed three additional First Information Reports (FIRs) related to these events. The unrest began on March 17, sparked by rumors that a sheet containing a “verse from the Quran” had been set ablaze during a demonstration organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).
The protest called for the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, leading to significant stone-pelting and arson incidents throughout Nagpur.
Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravindra Kumar Singhal confirmed the arrests, stating, “Fourteen suspects have been detained from various locations in connection with the riots. Furthermore, three new FIRs have been registered.” He mentioned that a decision regarding the lifting of the curfew in certain areas would be made after a high-level review meeting.
Commissioner Singhal also held a meeting at the Police Bhawan in Civil Lines to evaluate the situation. As a result, the curfew was partially lifted in Nandanvan and Kapil Nagar police station areas starting at 2 p.m. on Thursday (March 20, 2025) for public convenience and law-and-order considerations. In Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shantinagar, Sakkardara, and Imambada, the curfew was relaxed for two hours from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. to enable residents to buy essential supplies.
The violence resulted in injuries to 33 police personnel, including three officers of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) rank. Notably, a case of treason has been filed against the main suspect, Faheem Khan.
In a prior development, a local court in Nagpur ordered that 17 people arrested in connection with the violence remain in police custody until Saturday (March 22). The court cited the serious nature of the charges and the strong evidence presented against the accused.
