Nagpur Clashes: CM Fadnavis Promises Firm Action Against Those Disrupting Peace
The Chief Minister has been closely monitoring the circumstances and urged residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. He warned, “Anyone involved in inciting tension, throwing stones at the police, or attempting to disrupt the peace will face severe consequences.”
Deputy Commissioner of Police Niketan Kadam was injured during the unrest, reportedly suffering a hand injury from an attack involving an axe. Reports indicate that a mob engaged in arson and stone-pelting in the Mahal area of Nagpur, setting multiple vehicles ablaze. Authorities are concerned about significant financial losses resulting from these actions.
A substantial police presence has been deployed to manage the situation and disperse the crowds. A curfew has now been imposed in Nagpur as law enforcement intensifies its efforts to address the actions of anti-social elements, having already detained around 30 individuals. Police are enforcing that the situation is now under control and urged citizens not to believe rumors but instead cooperate with law enforcement.
Both ruling and opposition parties have called for calm, urging the public to reject misinformation and support the police’s efforts. The opposition has demanded a thorough investigation into the violent clashes, stone-throwing, and arson incidents that occurred on Monday.
BJP legislator Praveen Satke alleged that outsiders were responsible for setting fire to houses and engaging in violence. “There was an earlier protest which law enforcement managed, but later, mob violence erupted with stone-pelting and vehicle fires. It appears outsiders are instigating these incidents,” he stated.
“The situation is currently stabilized, but violence erupted with individuals from both sides involved. Immediate action must be taken against these offenders. I plan to visit Nagpur to assess the situation firsthand,” added Datke, whose constituency encompasses the Nagpur Central Assembly.
Pune NCP-SP chief Prashant Jagtap expressed concern over the Nagpur incident, characterizing it as unfortunate. “Is the government aiming for peace or chaos? With positive developments expected in the region, distractions from critical issues like inflation are surfacing. It’s imperative to control the situation in Nagpur immediately; otherwise, the community may protest. Upcoming local elections may be influencing these events,” he concluded.
