My Father Disapproved: Kuldeep Reflects on Secretly Playing Cricket After Joining PBKS

Published

Kuldeep Sen, the Punjab Kings’ latest signing from the IPL 2025 auction, is thrilled about the opportunity ahead and aims to make this season unforgettable for both himself and the team.

A passionate cricket lover since he was young, Sen began playing at just 15 years old. His dedication paid off when he made his ODI debut for India in 2022. Interestingly, during his early training days, only his mother was aware of his cricketing ambitions, as his father had no interest in the sport.

“My family didn’t know much about cricket. Coming from a middle-class background, they were unfamiliar with the sport—where to train, and so on. Everyone enjoyed watching cricket, but my father was never a fan. He only started watching once I took it up; prior to that, he wasn’t interested. Only my mother knew about my aspirations in cricket,” shared the right-arm fast bowler.

Kuldeep faced financial hurdles in his formative years, but being selected for the Madhya Pradesh team in 2019 not only earned him his father’s support but also eased his financial burdens. He made his international debut for India against Bangladesh in 2022.

Reflecting on the moment he received his India call-up, Sen said, “I was at the NCA when I received the news. I had no idea I was being selected. A friend from Rajasthan Royals called me to share the news while I was asleep. The night before my match against Bangladesh, I was too excited to sleep. Playing for my country remains the highlight of my life, and I will cherish that moment forever.”

As he prepares to represent PBKS in this year’s IPL, Sen expressed that the occasion is particularly meaningful, as his very first IPL trial was with Punjab Kings back in 2018.

“While training in Bangalore, I had a feeling that I would be picked by Punjab Kings even before the auction started, and I mentioned it to my friends. My first IPL trial was with Punjab Kings in 2018, so it felt like destiny when I was chosen this year. I’m looking forward to the new experiences with this fantastic team,” Kuldeep reminisced about his auction experience.

Kuldeep will also reconnect with his former Rajasthan Royals teammate, Yuzvendra Chahal. He shared insights about Chahal’s fun-loving nature and how eager he is to learn from him.

“I’ve spent three years with Yuzi bhai. He’s a lively and humorous person who brings joy to everyone around him, whether on the field or at the hotel. He has a great heart and is always open for a chat, providing numerous learning opportunities. However, he also loves to tease people for fun,” added Kuldeep.
