Muzaffar Ali and Sanjay Tripathi Celebrate Farooq Sheikh on His Birth Anniversary

Published

on

Muzaffar Ali, renowned for directing Farooq Sheikh in his remarkable films Gaman and Umrao Jaan, fondly reminisces about the beloved actor. “Farooq possessed a unique grace and an uncanny ability to authentically portray characters, leaving a lasting influence on Indian cinema. His quiet strength, even in narratives where the heroine was central, created a captivating balance in storytelling, enriching every single frame. Indeed, artists like him transcend cinema into a form of art, where emotions resonate and characters linger long after the screen goes dark. His absence is profoundly felt, yet his spirit continues to inspire and fortifies my path as a filmmaker.”
Sanjay Tripathi, who directed Farooq in his final film, Club 60, shares, “My memories of Farooq Sheikh extend far beyond the production of Club 60. Our relationship as actor and director blossomed into a beautiful friendship over our shared love for food. We delighted in the finest chaats, sweets, kebabs, and biryanis that Mumbai had to offer. I will never forget his call when he came to visit Shabanaji’s mom in Breach Candy while I was at Peddar Road. He asked me, “Kuch khaane ka mood hai, Sanjay sahab?” Before I knew it, we were at Noor Mohammadi Mithaiwale on Mohammad Ali Road, enjoying his favorite non-veg delights, followed by a selection of sweets from Suleman Mithaiwala. On our first day of shooting, someone offered him a multigrain bread sandwich, thinking he’d be health-conscious, but he responded with a grimace: “Mujhe aisi buri aadatein nahi hai. Mujhe safed waali bread Makhan ke saath aur chai chalegi.” Even just bringing this to mind brings a smile to my face. If he received sweets from anywhere, he’d save them for me until our next meeting. … He didn’t know how to drive, yet we needed a scene of him at the wheel. He joked, “Sanjay Sahab, ghode chae jitna daudwa lo, bas gaadi mat chalwao.” Many people don’t realize he was an enthusiastic horse rider…. So many memories! It feels as if it were just yesterday that he was with us, sharing laughter and his delightful humor. I feel fortunate to have worked alongside him. While I always recognized his talent as an exceptional actor, collaborating with him revealed his passion for food, insightful thoughts, a wonderful sense of humor, and above all, his extraordinary character. Miss you, Farooq Sahab.”
