Mumbai Police Hold Identification Parade for Suspects in Saif Ali Khan Stabbing Incident

Published

on

Mumbai Police held an identification parade for Shariful Islam Shehzad, the suspect in the Saif Ali Khan stabbing case, at Arthur Road Jail on Wednesday, according to officials.

Reports indicate that Shehzad allegedly broke into Saif’s home with the intention of theft and was recognized by witnesses who were present during the incident.

The police have stated that they possess substantial evidence linking him to the crime, including CCTV footage and a successful facial recognition match.

Last month, Saif Ali Khan was attacked by an intruder, later identified as Mohd Shariful Islam Shehzad, who reportedly tried to steal from his home. During a violent encounter, Saif suffered stab wounds to his thoracic spine and other areas, requiring immediate treatment at Lilavati Hospital.

The identification parade was conducted under the supervision of a Tehsildar in the Senior Jailor’s office at Arthur Road Jail, following judicial approval. Staff nurse Ariyama Philip and aaya Junu, who were in Saif’s residence during the attack, participated in identifying the suspect.

On January 31, Mumbai Police confirmed a positive facial recognition test for the accused. “The test confirmed that the individual seen in the CCTV footage is Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad,” stated a police official.

The investigation is ongoing, and Mumbai Police have asserted they have substantial evidence against the detained suspect. They clarified that he entered India from Bangladesh and had stayed in various locations in Kolkata before arriving in Mumbai.

Last month, Additional Commissioner of Police Paramjit Singh Dahiya dismissed rumors claiming that the suspect’s fingerprints did not match evidence found. “Whenever a suspect is apprehended, numerous types of evidence are gathered. We have collected significant oral, physical, and technological evidence against him… We have apprehended the right suspect,” he stated.

According to the police, the suspect planned to escape to his native village in Bangladesh but was arrested at Hiranandani Estate in Thane.

However, his lawyer, Sandeep Shekhane, disputed the police’s assertions, claiming that “no thorough investigation” had taken place. “The court has granted a five-day police custody and requested a report from them within that time. The police lack proof of him being Bangladeshi. Their claim that he arrived six months ago is inaccurate; he has been here for over seven years with his family in Mumbai. This is a clear violation of 43A, as no proper investigation has occurred,” Shekhane told reporters.

Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was discharged from Lilavati Hospital after undergoing surgery on January 21. Upon returning to his Bandra residence, he briefly addressed the media.
