Mumbai: A second-year student of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay died by suicide on Friday evening after being caught using a mobile phone during an examination.

The student, identified as Sahil from the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, reportedly uploaded the question paper to Chat-GPT to seek answers during the exam.

IIT Bombay said no disciplinary action had been initiated against him. The instructor and Head of the Department spoke to the student, counselled him and assured him that the incident would not affect his academic career.

The student later returned to his hostel room. He was found dead there in the evening.

IIT Bombay expressed deep sorrow over the incident and said support was being extended to students, faculty members and others affected by the tragedy. The circumstances surrounding the death are being investigated by the authorities.

Following the incident, several students gathered on campus and staged a protest. They demanded accountability, transparency and answers from the institute administration.

Police personnel were deployed on the campus as students and the administration held discussions. Senior police officer Dattatray Nalawade said the investigation was underway and efforts were being made to resolve the students’ concerns.

Mumbai: An 18-year-old NEET aspirant from Maharashtra’s Hingoli district died by suicide by jumping into a well. The incident has shocked the local community and raised concerns about the pressure faced by students.

The deceased has been identified as Sushil Dhage. He had appeared for the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination on June 21.

Before taking the extreme step, Sushil recorded a 33-second video and sent it to his family members. In the video, he folded his hands and asked his mother to forgive him.

He said, “Mother, I am going to end my life today. Please do not worry about me. In my next birth, I want to be your son again. I will not give you such pain again.”

He also asked his mother to stay happy with another family member named Sumedh. He said that he was suffering deeply and could not understand what to do.

Family members later found that he had jumped into a well. Police have started an investigation into the incident.

Mumbai: Four members of a family died after suspected food poisoning in Mumbai. The incident happened in the Pydhonie area.

The victims were identified as Abdullah Dokadia (40), his wife Nasreen Dokadia (35), and their daughters Aisha (16) and Zainab (13).

According to police, nine family members had dinner together on the night of April 25. They ate food at around 10:30 PM. After dinner, some relatives went back to their homes.

Later in the night, between 1:00 AM and 1:30 AM, the four family members ate watermelon. After a few hours, they started feeling unwell.

By early morning, around 5:30 AM to 6:00 AM, all four showed serious symptoms. They had vomiting and loose motions.

A family doctor first treated them. Later, they were taken to JJ Hospital for better treatment.

The younger daughter died at around 10:15 AM. The husband died later that night at about 10:30 PM. The wife and elder daughter also died during treatment.

Police said the exact cause of death is not yet confirmed. Post-mortem has been done. The final report is awaited.

An Accidental Death case has been registered at JJ Marg Police Station. Police are investigating the case.

Officials said the family had eaten biryani before eating watermelon. It is still not clear what caused the poisoning.

In another incident, a seven-year-old child died in Jharkhand. Around 18 people fell sick after eating contaminated golgappa and chaat.
