Most Wanted Criminal Extradited from Azerbaijan to Jharkhand
Jharkhand’s DGP Anurag Gupta has confirmed that, with the help of central agencies, all necessary legal steps for the extradition have been finalized. The Jharkhand Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) provided compelling evidence through Interpol, which led to Azerbaijani courts recognizing Mayank as a recognized criminal and approving his extradition. An initial ruling from a lower court in Baku permitted the extradition, subsequently upheld by the higher court.
A team from the Jharkhand ATS, headed by the Superintendent of Police, is set to travel to Azerbaijan for Mayank’s repatriation, after which he will be presented in court. The mission is pending final approval from the state government, but preparations are in full swing.
The extradition treaty between India and Azerbaijan was pivotal in this case. Police regard this operation as a significant step forward in combating criminals who operate internationally. Authorities believe Mayank’s return will not only benefit the Jharkhand Police but will also aid other states in dismantling organized crime networks.
Mayank had strong ties with gangster Aman Sahu, who was recently killed in a police operation. He managed Sahu’s financial and arms supply chains, and his interrogation is anticipated to yield critical information regarding further actions against Sahu’s associates.
Hailing from Rajasthan, Mayank is the first criminal from Jharkhand to be arrested and extradited from abroad. He became infamous for showcasing his extravagant lifestyle and sophisticated weaponry on social media. Following persistent efforts by the Jharkhand Police, he was captured in Baku last year.
For years, authorities were unaware of Mayank’s real identity. The ATS eventually uncovered that he was actually Sunil Meena from Rajasthan, orchestrating criminal activities in Jharkhand while residing overseas. A Red Corner Notice was issued against him, leading to his apprehension in Azerbaijan.
Mayank has an extensive criminal background and was a childhood acquaintance of the infamous gangster Lawrence. For the past two years, he had been collaborating closely with Aman Sahu, orchestrating extortion and other offenses in Jharkhand from Malaysia. Utilizing internet calls, he frequently threatened local businessmen and was highly active on social media, promoting his gang explicitly.
The Jharkhand ATS has registered numerous cases against Mayank across various police jurisdictions. After confirming his identity, they initiated a crackdown—issuing notices at his residence in Rajasthan, probing into his illicit wealth, and confiscating his properties. His passport was revoked, and legal actions intensified to ensure his arrest.
With the approval for his extradition now in place, the Jharkhand Police are gearing up to bring him back and present him in court, representing a significant triumph in the ongoing fight against organized crime.
