Morkel Amazed by Jasprit Bumrah’s Energy Ahead of England Series

Published

India’s bowling coach, Morne Morkel, has expressed his enthusiasm for Jasprit Bumrah’s outstanding form leading up to the five-Test series against England. Morkel stated he is “blown away” by Bumrah’s rhythm and energy observed during the early training sessions. Nevertheless, he highlighted the importance of being cautious about Bumrah’s workload throughout the summer.

Before the team’s departure, head coach Gautam Gambhir indicated that Bumrah may participate in only three out of the five Tests, due to his history of back injuries. The final decision on which matches he will play will depend on the progression of the series as well as Bumrah’s physical state.

“Bumrah knows how to prepare himself. Over the past three days, I was amazed to see his energy with the ball. It’s exciting to see him in good shape currently,” Morkel remarked on Wednesday.

“We’ll manage his workload wisely since he is crucial for us. In the first three net sessions, there’s so much to be excited about watching him bowl with the Dukes ball,” he added.

As they prepare for the series opener at Headingley, Leeds, starting June 20, India will engage in a three-day intra-squad match in Beckenham. This fixture, likely to be held behind closed doors, will feature players from the main Test squad alongside those from the India A side, which recently played two four-day matches against the England Lions.

In addition to Bumrah, India boasts several pace options, including Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, and Akash Deep. The team’s bowling combination will be carefully assessed ahead of the first Test. Seam-bowling all-rounders Shardul Thakur and Nitish Kumar Reddy are also part of the mix, although both struggled with their rhythm in the India A matches, making their inclusion in the playing XI uncertain.

Despite this, Morkel remains optimistic about Reddy’s capabilities.

“Having more bowling options is beneficial. He’s skillful and capable of delivering that magical ball. We need him to build consistency, which is crucial for his game,” Morkel said about Reddy.

“I’ve encouraged him to bowl more. I want to see him with the ball more often; we know how talented he is with the bat. If we can maximize our bowling options, especially in these conditions, he could be an exciting addition to our bowling attack,” he added.

As India prepared for a challenging series against a dynamic England side, the former South African fast bowler underscored the necessity of starting strong and applying pressure from the beginning.

“Given England’s style of play, we need to be at our best. We can’t afford to ease into this series. One thing that has impressed me over the past few sessions is how the players have stepped up and taken responsibility. They understand that this tour will be tough,” he noted.

“It’s encouraging for us as coaches to see players taking ownership and leading during practice,” he concluded.
