Mindy Kaling Becomes the First South Asian Woman Inducted on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
Taking to Instagram on Thursday, Mindy Kaling expressed her joy and gratitude, sharing a collection of images from the memorable event. She wrote, “Yesterday was one of the most special days of my life! My dearest friends and family surrounded me for the surreal and humbling experience of receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”
A particularly poignant moment came when Kaling’s longtime friend and former co-star from ‘The Office,’ BJ Novak, delivered a touching speech. He highlighted Kaling’s accomplishments as a showrunner, a mother, and a creative dynamo in Hollywood. Kaling reflected on his remarks, stating, “@bjnovak gave such a beautiful speech.”
A standout moment in the celebration was when Kaling learned that she is the first South Asian woman to receive a star on the Walk of Fame. She expressed her pride, saying, “I’m humbled by that. I am so proud to be South Asian, and I want to make my community proud of everything I do. More importantly, I want to help usher in the next generation of South Asian stars—who are already making a huge impact across the world.”
Although her children—Katherine Swati, 7, Spencer Avu, 4, and Anne, 1—were not present, fans remain fascinated by Novak’s close bond with Kaling’s family. Kaling often refers to him as a “godparent” to her children, a role she deeply values. During her acceptance speech, she reflected on their lasting friendship, noting, “He’s such an important and integral part of my family… Sometimes I forget that the reason I know him is because we worked together professionally.”
Kaling, now 45, first crossed paths with Novak in 2004 on the set of ‘The Office.’ Despite their romantic relationship ending in 2007, their friendship has endured. Over the years, there has been much speculation regarding the father of Kaling’s children, but she has consistently maintained that she will reveal that information when she feels it is appropriate.
