Milkipur Bypoll Records Over 66% Turnout Amid Irregularity Allegations

Published

on

Despite accusations of election rigging and misuse of government machinery made by the Samajwadi Party (SP), which officials have denied, more than 66% of the 370,000 eligible voters participated in the Milkipur (Reserved) Assembly bypoll on Wednesday.
The polling process was mostly peaceful, though the SP raised concerns about the alleged removal of its booth agents in certain areas.

Voter turnout was approximately 57% by 3 PM, increasing to 65.25% by 5 PM. This represents an increase of about 5% compared to the 60.44% turnout during the 2022 Assembly elections.

The results will be counted on February 8, which will reveal the outcome for the 10 candidates in the running.
In this by-election, a key competition is set between the SP’s Ajeet Prasad and the BJP’s Chandrabhanu Paswan, as neither the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) nor Congress has put forth candidates.
This bypoll was necessitated by the resignation of SP MP Awadhesh Prasad, who vacated the seat after winning the Faizabad (Ayodhya) Lok Sabha election last year. His son, Ajeet Prasad, is now the SP candidate succeeding him after winning the Milkipur seat in the 2022 Assembly elections.

Ernakulam: A dead Russell’s viper was found on a passenger seat inside a Vande Bharat Express in Ernakulam, causing panic among passengers.

The incident took place on Friday, August 14, at around 2.30 pm. The train was scheduled to leave Ernakulam Junction for Bengaluru.

The incident came to light before the train began its journey. Vinu Varghese, who works for an insurance company in Ernakulam, had booked a ticket to travel to Coimbatore with his two-year-old child.

When he returned to his seat after visiting the restroom, he noticed the dead snake lying on the seat. He was shocked and immediately informed the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) and railway staff.

The railway staff quickly responded to the situation. With the help of passengers, they removed the dead snake from the coach.

After the snake was removed, the passengers felt relieved. Vinu Varghese later filed an official complaint through the railway portal.

In his complaint, he questioned the safety and cleanliness standards on the train. He said passengers pay a significant amount for travelling on Vande Bharat trains and expected better safety measures.

Varghese said the railway staff later apologised for the incident.

The incident has also raised questions about how a snake entered the passenger compartment. Vande Bharat trains are air-conditioned and have sealed gangways and automatic doors that open only at designated stations.
