“Mickey 17” Earns Impressive Revenues but Has More Ground to Cover

Robert Pattinson’s sci-fi thriller, ‘Mickey 17,’ is set to hit theaters on March 7. Directed by Bong Joon Ho, the Oscar-winning filmmaker of ‘Parasite,’ this film is adapted from Edward Ashton’s novel, ‘Mickey 7.’ Pattinson stars as Mickey Barnes, a disposable worker who embarks on a mission to colonize a new planet, only to be replaced by one of his clones each time he dies. However, the mission is anything but straightforward. Since its release, the film has been garnering impressive numbers at the global box office, but it still has a considerable journey ahead to break even.

Opening with an overseas collection of $24 million and over $50 million worldwide, ‘Mickey 17’ has made a strong debut thanks to the star power of Bong Joon Ho and Robert Pattinson. The film premiered on February 28 in Korea, where it has since grossed $34.2 million overseas and $53.3 million globally, which includes $19.1 million from its North American debut.

Yet, the film’s financial journey is far from over. Warner Bros. put a substantial investment of $118 million into production, with an additional $80 million for marketing. According to Variety, ‘Mickey 17’ will need to gross approximately $275 million to $300 million globally to achieve profitability during its theatrical run.

The breakdown of the film’s box office performance shows that Korea leads with $14.6 million after two weekends, followed by France at $2.9 million and the United Kingdom at $2.7 million for their openings. Unfortunately, the film underperformed in China, bringing in just $1.3 million at launch.

In addition to Pattinson, ‘Mickey 17’ features an impressive cast including Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Steven Yeun. Looking ahead, Pattinson will also appear in Christopher Nolan’s ensemble film ‘The Odyssey,’ alongside stars like Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya.
