Bantwal: A major accident was averted when an Omni car overturned near Kodaje, close to Mani in Bantwal taluk, on Sunday. The vehicle, carrying a family from Kushalnagar, was returning from Mangaluru when one of its wheels reportedly malfunctioned, causing the car to skid off the road and overturn into a roadside pit.

There were five passengers in the car at the time of the accident. The driver sustained a serious injury to his leg, while the other four passengers escaped with minor injuries. Local youths rushed to the spot and helped rescue those trapped inside the vehicle.

The car was badly damaged in the incident. Police personnel from Vittal station visited the spot and conducted an inspection. The injured were shifted to a hospital in Mangaluru for further treatment

Bantwal: A tense situation arose in the Narikombu Gram Panchayat limits after residents accused the Panchayat of dumping garbage by the roadside at Koppalakodi. The incident occurred when waste collected from Nehru Nagar was allegedly transported and dumped near a public road in Koppalakodi.

According to locals, the garbage was brought in a Panchayat waste disposal vehicle and dumped in an area surrounded by houses and a Shishu Mandir school. Angered by this act, residents gathered at the spot and strongly protested against the Panchayat officials.

Villagers immediately informed the Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) about the issue and demanded that the garbage be removed. They also insisted that the waste be taken back and dumped at its original location.

Police later visited the spot to calm the situation and ensured peace in the area. Following public pressure, the authorities successfully moved the dumped garbage back to its original place.

Residents alleged that the Gram Panchayat president, members, and the PDO were involved in allowing the dumping. They claimed that the Panchayat’s own waste vehicle and driver were instructed to dispose of the garbage there. When locals tried to contact the president and members, their phones were reportedly switched off.

The villagers have warned that if such incidents happen again, they will dump the waste in front of the Panchayat office and hold a protest.

Bantwal: Two youths were seriously injured after a car coming from the wrong side hit their bike near Talapady, close to BC Road, on Friday afternoon.

The injured have been identified as Midlaj, a resident of Vittla and a student of the MIFS Institute, and another youth whose name is yet to be known. Both were pursuing a Fire and Safety course at the MIFS Institute in Adyar.

According to reports, the students were returning home to Vittla after completing their classes in Adyar when a speeding car coming from the wrong side of the road collided with their bike at Talapady. The impact was severe, and their newly purchased bike was badly damaged.

The accident caused a traffic jam on the National Highway for some time. Bantwal traffic police visited the spot and took necessary action.

Local residents alleged that such accidents often occur because some vehicles take the service road at Talapady to avoid paying toll at the Brahmarakootlu toll plaza.
