Mangaluru: Condemning the poor condition of National Highway 66, the Dakshina Kannada District Congress staged a massive protest on Thursday following the death of Madhavi, who lost her life after falling into a pothole at Kuloor.

The protest march began from the Congress Bhavan at Mallikatte, where party workers carried out a mock funeral procession, symbolizing the death caused by official negligence. The procession culminated at the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) office, where protesters laid siege and raised slogans against the authorities.

Speaking at the protest, Congress leaders lashed out at MPs and MLAs from the ruling BJP, accusing them of apathy and failure to ensure basic road safety. They alleged that despite collecting huge sums through tolls, the NHAI has failed to maintain the highway, leading to fatal accidents.

MLC Ivan D’Souza demanded an immediate compensation of ₹1 crore for the family of the deceased. He also criticized MP Brijesh Chowta, MLAs Bharath Shetty and Vedavyas Kamath, and NHAI officials for their lack of responsibility.

District Congress president Harish Kumar, former MLA J R Lobo, and leaders including R Padmaraj, Mithun Rai, Shashidhar Hegde, Sadashiva Ullal, and Mamatha Gatti participated in the protest. The gathering resounded with slogans condemning the central government, MP Brijesh Chowta, and BJP leaders for their failure to address the issue.
