Mangalore’s Kalasha Monument to Be Reinstalled After 7 Years
Mangaluru: The iconic Kalasha monument, which once stood as a significant landmark at Mahaveer Circle (previously Pumpwell Circle) in Mangaluru, is set to return after seven years. The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL), in collaboration with the Jain community, have finalized plans for its reinstallation at a new location near the Pumpwell flyover.
The Kalasha, which was originally installed by the Jain community in 2003 during the Mahavir Janma Kalyanak festival, was removed in 2016 to facilitate the construction of the flyover on National Highway-66. Weighing nearly 30 tonnes and standing 18 feet tall, the monument became a well-known city entrance landmark along with its surrounding garden.
After years of request from the Jain community, the MCC and MSCL have identified a traffic island near the flyover for the reinstallation of the Kalasha. A pedestal will be constructed for the monument, and the surrounding area will be beautified. The Jain society, led by Pushparaj Jain, president of the Mangaluru Jain Society, will take charge of the reinstallation process.
The refurbishment of the Kalasha will be completed before the monument is reinstalled, and the work is expected to conclude by February 15, 2025. The initiative is a joint effort by the MCC, MSCL, and the Jain community to restore the historical landmark while enhancing the aesthetics of the area.
