Man Defrauded of Rs 58 Lakhs in Old Coin Scam in Mangaluru
Mangaluru: A retired man from Mangaluru was defrauded of Rs 58.26 lakh by cybercriminals who lured him with a fake advertisement about purchasing old coins. The victim, who had returned to Mangaluru from abroad, had 15 old coins in his possession. The scammers convinced him that these coins would fetch a large sum of money.
According to police, the fraud began when the victim came across an advertisement on Facebook regarding the purchase of old coins. Shortly after, he was contacted via WhatsApp by the scammers, who promised to buy the coins for Rs 49 lakh. They initially asked him to pay Rs 750 for RBI registration, which the victim complied with.
However, the fraudsters continued to deceive the victim by demanding additional payments for various fees, including Rs 3.5 lakh for RBI registration, GST, and ITR. The scammers, who identified themselves as Mumbai Cyber Police Commissioner Gaurav Shivaji Rao Shinde, further intimidated the victim by claiming that the Old Coin Scamhad issued a notice against him and that he would be arrested. They pressured him to pay an additional Rs 12.55 lakh under the pretext of complying with RBI guidelines.
The victim, believing their threats, transferred a total of Rs 58.26 lakh to the scammers’ bank accounts. A case has been registered at the Mangaluru South Police Station, and an investigation is underway to track down the culprits.
Authorities have urged the public to be cautious of such scams and to verify any financial dealings before making payments.
