Maken Critiques AAP Government’s Education and Transport Strategies
Maken claimed that the people of Delhi have grown aware of Kejriwal’s misleading models and are resolved to vote for Congress on February 5, seeking to restore the development and progress associated with Sheila Dikshit’s Congress government. He pointed out that during Congress’s tenure from 2008-09, 75,974 students successfully passed the 12th Board exams, a number that increased to 147,420 by the time Congress left office in 2013-14. However, under AAP’s governance, that number dropped to 116,792 in 2015-16 and further declined to 109,098 in 2019-20.
Maken continued, stating that in 2013-14, there were 17.75 lakh students in government schools compared to 13.57 lakh in private schools. By 2018-19, the number of students in private schools surged to 16.61 lakh, whereas government school enrollment fell to 16.47 lakh. This trend, he said, reveals the inefficacy of AAP’s educational model, suggesting that students either dropped out of government schools or transferred to private institutions for superior education.
Addressing the pollution crisis, Maken emphasized that the major contributor to Delhi’s air pollution is the high volume of vehicles on the roads, stemming from a disrupted public transport system—not stubble-burning by farmers, as Kejriwal has claimed. He pointed out that, according to TERI, vehicular emissions—which accounted for 28% of PM2.5 in 2016—now contribute to 47% of the total in the Capital.
Maken mentioned that Delhi is seeing the addition of approximately 1,800 new vehicles each day. He attributed the surge in private vehicles to the reduced passenger capacity of the DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation). He stated that while Congress was in power from 2012 to 2013, the DTC transported 46.77 lakh passengers daily; by August 2024, this number plummeted to 24.43 lakh under AAP’s governance. Moreover, the DTC’s bus fleet decreased from 5,609 in 2012-13 to 4,541 in August 2024, with the number of DTC depots also falling from 43 to 38.
