Maharashtra Stirs Controversy in Karnataka with “Exports” of Welfare Schemes Across the Border

Published

on

The Maharashtra government, along with various activists, is continuously aggravating the Karnataka government through actions aimed at promoting claims over 865 border villages in Karnataka. Recently, tensions escalated in the border town of Belagavi, where Kannada activists reported violent incidents targeting Karnataka Road Transport Corporation employees for communicating in Kannada instead of Marathi during bus journeys within Karnataka.

This incident triggered unrest in both Karnataka and Maharashtra, leading to a temporary suspension of bus services in February. Following negotiations between the two states’ ministers, services were restored, but underlying tensions regarding language and competing claims to the disputed villages remain high. Notably, these villages have a majority Marathi-speaking population, and many residents are bilingual.

The latest controversy involves Maharashtra’s expansion of the Phule Public Health Scheme to residents of these 865 Marathi-speaking villages in Karnataka. Beneficiaries have reportedly received financial assistance via cheques issued by officials from the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s office. The disputed regions span five districts—Belagavi, Karwar, Kalburgi, and Bidar—encompassing 12 taluks and 865 villages.

Furthermore, the Maharashtra government has reserved jobs for residents from these areas, with promises of employment opportunities in Maharashtra, according to Ashok Chandaragi, President of the Belagavi District Kannada Organisation. He expressed frustration over the persistent interference from Maharashtra in the border districts and lamented that his entreaties to the Karnataka government have gone unheard.

Today, Kannada activists are observing a state-wide bandh to draw attention to the tensions impacting border areas due to actions from Maharashtra’s government, various organizations, and their advocates.
