Maharashtra Reports 167 Cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome

Published

on

The Maharashtra Health Department announced on Monday that the state has recorded a total of 192 suspected cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), with 167 of these cases confirmed. Additionally, there have been seven reported deaths related to the syndrome, with one confirmed as GBS and six others still under investigation.
The cases have been distributed across various regions, including 39 from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), 91 from recently added villages within the PMC area, 29 from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), 25 from Pune Rural, and 8 from other districts.

Currently, 48 patients are receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while 21 are on ventilators. So far, 91 patients have been successfully discharged after treatment.
Health officials are actively monitoring the situation and have ramped up surveillance efforts in the affected areas.

On February 6, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) took decisive action by sealing off 30 private water supply plants in Nanded village, Dhayari, and nearby locations along Sinhgad Road, which have been identified as the outbreak’s epicenter. According to a PMC official, this operation was carried out following sample tests that revealed the water was unsafe for drinking. Some plants were operating without proper permits, while others tested positive for Escherichia coli bacteria, and many lacked adequate disinfection and chlorination processes.
On February 3, the Union Health Minister convened a high-level meeting with key health and medical officials in Maharashtra to review the public health measures being implemented by the state, including the testing and treatment of GBS patients.
Guillain-Barre Syndrome is an autoimmune disorder that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nervous system, resulting in symptoms such as muscle weakness and, in severe instances, paralysis.
