The Chief Minister noted that over 66 crore 21 lakh devotees experienced the holy blessing of bathing in the Triveni during Mahakumbh-2025, which began on January 13, Paush Purnima, and continued until February 26, Maha Shivratri, in Prayagraj.

In today’s fast-paced world, few events possess the power to gather millions in pursuit of a higher purpose. The Maha Kumbh Mela, held from January 13, 2025, to February 26, 2025, is a revered pilgrimage celebrated four times every 12 years.
Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest peaceful congregation, attracts millions of pilgrims who bathe in sacred rivers, seeking to cleanse themselves of sins and attain spiritual liberation.
The Maha Kumbh Mela is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology, representing one of the most significant faith gatherings globally.
This sacred event rotates among four locations in India—Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik, and Prayagraj—each by a holy river: Ganges, Shipra, Godavari, and the confluence of Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Sarasvati in Prayagraj.
The anticipated turnout of 45 crore devotees over 45 days was surpassed within a month, totaling over 66 crores by the conclusion of the event.
The Shahi Snan, the most significant ritual where millions bathe at Triveni Sangam to wash away sins and seek Moksha, attracted attention, especially on auspicious dates like Paush Purnima and Makar Sankranti, featuring grand processions of saints and Akharas that marked the official start of the Mahakumbh.
The roots of Kumbh Mela are anchored in Hindu mythology. According to the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) narrative in ancient scriptures, the gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras) vied for the Amrit (nectar of immortality). During this celestial conflict, drops of the nectar landed at the four locations—Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik—where the Kumbh Mela is now observed, with the Mahakumbh occurring once every 144 years at Prayagraj.
Historical references to the Maha Kumbh Mela trace back to ancient times, with notes from the Maurya and Gupta periods. It received royal backing from various dynasties, including the Mughals and was chronicled by colonial administrators like James Prinsep.
Over the centuries, it has evolved into a global spiritual and cultural phenomenon. Recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage, the Kumbh Mela symbolizes India’s enduring traditions, fostering unity, spirituality, and cultural exchanges among millions across the globe.
The timing of each Kumbh Mela is governed by the astrological positions of the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter, deemed auspicious for spiritual cleansing and enlightenment.
The festival represents a confluence of faith, culture, and tradition, drawing ascetics, seekers, and devotees alike. The grandeur of the event features Shahi Snans (bathing rituals), enlightening spiritual discourses, and vibrant cultural parades that embody India’s rich spiritual heritage.
Maha Kumbh Nagar has been transformed into a temporary city with thousands of tents and accommodations, including luxury options such as the IRCTC’s “Maha Kumbh Gram” offering deluxe tents and villas equipped with modern amenities.
Additionally, 800 multi-language signages (Hindi, English, and regional languages) were installed for visitor guidance, with over 2,69,000 checkered plates laid out as pathways. Mobile toilets and effective waste management systems were established to ensure hygiene standards.
The Mahakumbh 2025 featured an extensive medical setup to safeguard the health of millions of devotees. With over 2,000 medical personnel mobilized throughout the Mela area, the Uttar Pradesh government delivered advanced healthcare services across all sectors. From minor treatments to major surgeries, all medical needs were proficiently met.
The entire medical infrastructure was consistently monitored by senior officials to ensure smooth operations, cleanliness, and prompt emergency responses. These arrangements played a pivotal role in managing healthcare for millions attending the Mahakumbh 2025.
Ayush OPDs, clinics, stalls, and wellness sessions became major attractions for attendees at Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj. The Ministry of Ayush, in partnership with the National Ayush Mission, Uttar Pradesh, provided complimentary healthcare services to both domestic and international pilgrims. With an emphasis on traditional healing systems, Ayush services witnessed strong participation, reinforcing global confidence in Ayurveda, Homeopathy, and Naturopathy.
Security measures at Mahakumbh 2025 were bolstered through a seven-tier system featuring AI-powered surveillance, a significant deployment of personnel, and emergency response strategies.
More than 50,000 security personnel, including paramilitary forces, 14,000 home guards, and 2,750 AI-based CCTV cameras, were deployed. Enhanced measures encompassed drone and underwater surveillance, cybersecurity, and river safety. Fire safety infrastructure was upgraded with specialized vehicles and emergency response units. Lost and Found centers utilized digital registration and social media updates to reunite missing individuals with their families.
Over 65 crore devotees visited the Maha Kumbh Nagar. To ensure that such a vast number of devotees remained well-informed, the Uttar Pradesh government employed every platform, including print, digital, and social media. Cybersecurity experts actively monitored online threats and investigated gangs exploiting platforms such as AI, Facebook, X, and Instagram. A mobile cyber team was also deployed for large-scale public awareness campaigns.
The Mahakumbh 2025 necessitated extensive preparations by Indian Railways to assure smooth transportation, safety, and infrastructure readiness. Indian Railways executed substantial operational, infrastructural, and security measures to accommodate the unprecedented influx of devotees in Prayagraj and surrounding areas.
On February 12, 2025, the Uttar Pradesh government deployed 1200 additional buses, adding to the 3050 already allocated for the event. Special shuttle services were organized to improve intra-city transportation.
Prayagraj Airport underwent considerable modernization to handle the significant influx of devotees during the Maha Kumbh Mahotsav from January 13 to February 26, 2025. Expansion efforts enhanced connectivity, capacity, and passenger services to ensure a smooth travel experience. To facilitate seamless travel for tourists attending the Mahakumbh, the Ministry of Tourism collaborated with Alliance Air to boost air connections to Prayagraj from various cities across India.
Both the Union Government and the Uttar Pradesh government instituted multiple measures to provide affordable dining options and ensure food safety at Mahakumbh 2025. Subsidized rations, complimentary meals, and strict food safety protocols were set up to cater to millions of devotees.
Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj emerged as a global phenomenon, drawing foreign tourists, travel writers, and spiritual seekers from diverse nations. The Uttar Pradesh government and the Ministry of Tourism executed extensive initiatives to promote international participation, facilitate cultural exchange, and establish the event on the global tourism stage.
A total of 13 Akharas participated in this Mahakumbh, including the Kinnar Akhara, Dashnam Sannyasini Akhara, and Mahila Akhara, symbolizing gender equality and progressive ideals. The grand processions and sacred rituals of the Akharas captivated millions of devotees, inspiring spiritual growth, discipline, and unity.
These institutions not only preserved the spiritual and cultural values of Sanatan Dharma but also embraced modern sensibilities by promoting inclusivity and equality. The presence of Akharas at Mahakumbh fostered unity across caste, religion, and cultural diversity, turning the event into a beacon of spiritual and cultural enrichment.
Experts from various fields shared their insights on addressing environmental challenges and implementing eco-friendly solutions. Additionally, discussions explored ways to raise awareness among visitors about environmental protection, promoting initiatives that ensured a cleaner and greener Mahakumbh.
The event reaffirmed the vision of an environmentally conscientious Mahakumbh, setting a standard for sustainable practices in future religious assemblies.
