Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla stated on Wednesday that India holds Madagascar in high esteem as a valued and dependable friend, as well as a committed partner in its developmental journey. He highlighted that Madagascar is a crucial ally for India in the Indian Ocean region, aligning with the “SAGAR” (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision. This vital partnership, he noted, is essential for enhancing regional stability and promoting economic growth.

Birla made these comments during a bilateral meeting with a delegation from Madagascar, led by Justin Tokely, President of the National Assembly, at the Parliament House.

During the discussion, he emphasized the long-standing and robust relationship between India and Madagascar, rooted in centuries of trade, culture, and mutual engagement. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to the principle of ‘Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam’, which inspires the country to assist its neighbors, particularly in times of disaster.

Mr. Birla acknowledged India’s active role in providing humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) to Madagascar and noted that India has backed various projects aimed at enhancing Madagascar’s socio-economic development, reflecting a shared vision for mutually beneficial progress.

He also recognized the significant contributions of the Indian Diaspora in Madagascar in strengthening bilateral ties. He expressed his satisfaction with the inaugural ‘Jaipur Foot Camp’ held in Madagascar, where hundreds of differently-abled individuals received artificial limbs.

Emphasizing India’s democratic heritage, Mr. Birla pointed out that India is the world’s oldest and largest democracy, with a historical legacy as the ‘Mother of Democracy’. He underscored that democracy is not just a system of governance in India, but a fundamental aspect of its cultural and spiritual identity.

Ernakulam: A dead Russell’s viper was found on a passenger seat inside a Vande Bharat Express in Ernakulam, causing panic among passengers.

The incident took place on Friday, August 14, at around 2.30 pm. The train was scheduled to leave Ernakulam Junction for Bengaluru.

The incident came to light before the train began its journey. Vinu Varghese, who works for an insurance company in Ernakulam, had booked a ticket to travel to Coimbatore with his two-year-old child.

When he returned to his seat after visiting the restroom, he noticed the dead snake lying on the seat. He was shocked and immediately informed the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) and railway staff.

The railway staff quickly responded to the situation. With the help of passengers, they removed the dead snake from the coach.

After the snake was removed, the passengers felt relieved. Vinu Varghese later filed an official complaint through the railway portal.

In his complaint, he questioned the safety and cleanliness standards on the train. He said passengers pay a significant amount for travelling on Vande Bharat trains and expected better safety measures.

Varghese said the railway staff later apologised for the incident.

The incident has also raised questions about how a snake entered the passenger compartment. Vande Bharat trains are air-conditioned and have sealed gangways and automatic doors that open only at designated stations.
