Lotus Blossoms in Delhi After 27 Years
In the 70-member Delhi Assembly, the BJP, which campaigned vigorously under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, secured 48 seats. In contrast, the AAP, which had anticipated holding onto power, managed to win only 22 seats.
This marks the AAP’s worst electoral performance since it first contested elections in Delhi in 2013. Several prominent AAP leaders faced defeat, including national convener and former chief minister Kejriwal, former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, and former Health Minister Satyendar Jain.
To put this in perspective, in the 2013 Assembly elections, the AAP won 28 seats, becoming the second largest party. In the following elections—2015 and 2020—the Kejriwal-led party achieved overwhelming victories, clinching 67 and 62 seats, respectively.
Kejriwal, who has represented the New Delhi constituency since 2013 after defeating former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, lost his seat to BJP’s Parvesh Verma, the son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma. Sisodia, who transitioned from the Patparganj seat to Jangpura, was defeated by BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah. In the Greater Kailash constituency, Bharadwaj lost to BJP nominee Shikha Roy, while Jain was vanquished by Karnail Singh from the BJP.
In several constituencies, including New Delhi and Jangpura, AAP’s losses appeared to be bolstered by votes for Congress candidates, inadvertently benefiting the BJP. However, Chief Minister Atishi held onto her seat in Kalkaji, while Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai retained Babarpur and Food and Civil Supplies Minister Imran Hussain secured his position in Ballimaran.
Among the BJP’s notable winners were Harish Khurana from Moti Nagar, Arvinder Singh Lovely from Gandhi Nagar, Kapil Mishra from Karawal Nagar, and Kailash Gahlot, who had previously left the AAP before the elections, winning from Bijwasan.
It’s worth noting that the outgoing Assembly had only eight BJP MLAs. The Congress Party, which failed to win any seats in the last two elections, again finished without representation, despite a vigorous campaign against both the AAP and BJP.
