Koppal Woman Uses Gruha Lakshmi Savings to Repair Village Road

Published

on

Koppal : In a remarkable act of community service, Savita Nagareddi, a woman farmer from Yarehanchinal village on the Koppal-Gadag district border, has utilized her savings from the Gruha Lakshmi scheme to clear a neglected village road obstructed by overgrown plants and thorny bushes.

While many beneficiaries of the Gruha Lakshmi scheme—which offers ₹2,000 per month to women—have used the funds for personal needs such as purchasing gold or digging borewells, Savita chose a more community-focused path. She saved her monthly assistance for 11 months and spent approximately ₹22,000 to hire excavators and pay daily wage workers to clear the road leading from Yarehanchinal to Kotumachagi village.

Despite several requests made by villagers to the local panchayats, no action had been taken to clear the road. Frustrated by the lack of response, Savita decided to take matters into her own hands and improve the road conditions for the benefit of the entire village. Her initiative has drawn widespread praise from residents, who commended her for her dedication and selflessness.

Savita, with the full support of her husband Umesh—also a farmer—said she is committed to using the Gruha Lakshmi funds for similar public welfare efforts in the future.

Members of the Yelburga Farmers’ Association, including its president Andappa Kolur, visited the site and applauded Savita’s contribution. Kolur noted that the road had long been in poor condition, with potholes, exposed tar, and thick thorny vegetation on both sides, posing risks to both pedestrians and vehicles. Despite submitting a petition to local MLA Basavaraj Rayareddy requesting road repairs, the issue had remained unaddressed until Savita stepped in.

Speaking to the media, Savita shared, “I’ve seen how difficult it is for villagers to walk on this road. Many have sustained injuries because of the thorny bushes—we ourselves have been hurt. So I decided to use my Gruha Lakshmi savings for this cause. If needed, I’m willing to spend more. This is just a small service to my fellow villagers.”

Savita’s inspiring act has not only brought immediate relief to her community but also set an example that could encourage more grassroots-led development in rural areas.

Streets and public buildings across cities and towns were decorated with red and yellow flags, symbolizing the colors of Karnataka.

Many schools and colleges held special assemblies to teach students about the significance of the day. People from all walks of life participated in rallies and events to express their love for the Kannada language.
