Kiran Rao Responds to “Laapataa Ladies” Outperforming Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Film on Netflix

Director Kiran Rao is celebrating a significant achievement as her film ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has outperformed Ranbir Kapoor’s blockbuster ‘Animal’ in viewership on Netflix. This accomplishment is especially noteworthy given that ‘Animal’ was one of Bollywood’s highest-grossing films of 2023, often criticized for its misogynistic themes. In contrast, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ is a modestly budgeted film that champions women’s empowerment without relying on major stars.

Reflecting on the film’s unexpected success, Kiran Rao described the accomplishment as a “real high.” In an interview with ANI, she expressed her excitement: “We exceeded their numbers, which felt thrilling because ‘Animal’ was such a major film that performed extraordinarily well. Our movie managed to break several records on OTT that we didn’t achieve in theaters.”

Released in 2024, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ is a touching narrative set in rural India in 2001. The film follows the story of two young brides who become inadvertently separated during a train journey, prompting a heartfelt investigation led by a compassionate police officer named Kishan. Unlike the typical high-budget Bollywood productions, this film features emerging talents, including Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Sinha, and Sparsh Shrivastava.

Despite its smaller scale, the film gained traction through positive word-of-mouth and critical acclaim, even receiving a standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival. While ‘Laapataa Ladies’ performed reasonably at the box office, it truly resonated with viewers on Netflix. Its unique narrative and compelling performances demonstrated that a strong story can stand out without the need for star power or sensational storylines.

Kiran Rao acknowledged the challenges of creating a film without major names but attributed its success to its genuine approach. “We understood we didn’t have big stars. However, we had immense faith in our vision, backed by Aamir (Khan) and Jyoti Deshpande from Jio. We managed to stick to a realistic budget while achieving our box office goals.”

Produced by Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions, with support from Jio Studios, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ features a script by Biplab Goswami, while Sneha Desai crafted the screenplay and dialogues, with additional contributions from Divyanidhi Sharma.

Kiran Rao, known for her work on films like ‘Peepli Live’, ‘Talaash’, and ‘Secret Superstar’, has once again illustrated that powerful storytelling can triumph regardless of budget constraints or star presence.
