Kho Kho World Cup Champions Decline Karnataka Govt’s Cash Award
Bengaluru: Karnataka’s sporting pride took a hit as two of its players, M.K. Gautham and Chaitra B, who were part of India’s victorious men’s and women’s teams at the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup, rejected the state government’s cash award.
The duo expressed disappointment over the token amount offered by the Karnataka government, which they felt did not reflect the significance of their achievement. India’s triumph at the Kho Kho World Cup was a moment of national pride, and both players expected due recognition for their contribution.
Sources suggest that the Karnataka government had announced a nominal cash prize, which the players saw as an inadequate reward for their dedication and hard work. In contrast, other states have been known to offer substantial financial rewards and job opportunities to their athletes for similar accomplishments.
Speaking about their decision, Gautham and Chaitra emphasized that their rejection was not about money but about the value and respect given to athletes representing the country. Their move has sparked criticism of the state’s approach to sports incentives, with many calling for better support and encouragement for sportspersons.
The controversy has put pressure on the Karnataka government to reassess its sports policy and ensure that athletes who bring laurels to the state and nation receive the recognition they deserve.
