Keir Starmer Supports Netflix Drama ‘Adolescence’ as a Call to Action Against Online Violence
Featuring the talented Stephen Graham and co-written by renowned screenwriter Jack Thorne, ‘Adolescence’ explores the grim influence of online subcultures, especially incel culture, on young people. The narrative centers around a 13-year-old boy arrested following the murder of a teenage girl at school, revealing the profound effect social media has on impressionable minds.
Critics aren’t the only ones captivated—‘Adolescence’ has soared to the pinnacle of Netflix’s global charts, indicating that audiences are eager to engage in this dialogue.
During Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs), Labour MP Anneliese Midgley challenged Starmer on whether he would back calls for the show to be screened in schools and even in Parliament. His reply was a resounding yes.
“At home, we are watching ‘Adolescence’,” Starmer remarked, referring to his teenage children. “The violence perpetrated by young men, shaped by what they encounter online, is a genuine issue. It’s appalling, and we must confront it.”

His comments resonated with many, underscoring the urgency of tackling online dangers.
Amid the series gaining traction, a group of approximately 25 Labour MPs has come together to advocate for stricter online safety regulations. Their objective is to hold social media companies accountable for the harmful content their platforms expose to young users.
In the meantime, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy confirmed that while there are no plans to prohibit smartphones for those under 16, the government is moving ahead with the Online Safety Act. This legislation seeks to clamp down on tech companies and ensure they take meaningful responsibility for the safety of young users.
However, opinions vary on whether this is sufficient. Some MPs are pushing for even stricter measures, including raising the minimum age for social media accounts from 13 to 16—a proposal that has unfortunately lost momentum due to insufficient government support.
Labour MP Johnathan Brash is advocating for ‘Adolescence’ to be shown in schools. After watching the series, he was so moved that he immediately embraced his son. “It’s both powerful and disturbing,” he expressed, supporting the idea of incorporating certain scenes into primary school lessons on social media risks.
Co-writer Jack Thorne has also spoken out, criticizing the government’s slow response to online threats. He believes the time for gradual approaches has passed—immediate and decisive action is necessary.
