This collaboration is a vital effort by the Maldives to draw in more visitors, especially following recent diplomatic tensions with India. Historically, the Maldives has been a prime vacation spot for Indian travelers, but the previous year saw a decline in tourism due to political strains. The controversy was ignited by three Maldivian deputy ministers making inappropriate remarks about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after his visit to the Lakshadweep islands, aiming to develop them as a beach tourism destination.

In response, New Delhi took decisive measures, summoning the Maldivian envoy and filing formal protests. The ministers were suspended, yet the diplomatic issues significantly impacted tourism, leading to nearly a one-third drop in Indian arrivals to the Maldives.
