Karan Johar Describes Netflix’s ‘Adolescence’ as a ‘Wake-Up Call’ for Parents

Published

on

Karan Johar, renowned for his extravagant Bollywood productions, is typically the emotional architect behind his films. However, this time, he found himself deeply affected by Netflix’s British crime drama, ‘Adolescence.’
Taking to Instagram, Johar expressed a poignant reflection on the series, revealing how it resonated with him as both a filmmaker and a father. His heartfelt message highlighted the daunting challenges of parenting in a social media-driven world, where issues like bullying and toxic masculinity are influencing the youth in ways that previous generations never encountered.

As a father of twins, Yash and Roohi, KJo candidly shared that no amount of books or parenting podcasts can adequately prepare someone for the realities of raising children today.

“What you say, how you say it, what you feel, and how you express it… your habits, behaviors, ideologies, and politics… EVERYTHING ultimately influences your child,” he articulated.
He commended ‘Adolescence’ for its unflinching depiction of the trials faced by young individuals, labeling it a “gut-wrenching show” that holds a mirror to contemporary parenting.

“I was raised on conversations; they communicate through emojis. I grew up with books; they’re scrolling through reels. I embraced self-discovery; they live in a world of comparisons,” he elaborated, noting that the digital era is fostering a silent pandemic that many parents overlook.

Beyond its thought-provoking subject matter, Johar also praised the show’s technical execution. Directed by Philip Barantini, ‘Adolescence’ is characterized by long, uninterrupted takes that enhance its dramatic impact.

The series tells the harrowing story of 13-year-old Jamie Miller (played by Owen Cooper), who finds himself accused of murdering a classmate. Adding to the emotional depth, Stephen Graham—one of the show’s co-creators—portrays Jamie’s father, Eddie Miller.

Johar referred to the four-part miniseries as a “masterclass for parents,” emphasizing its profound effect on his awareness and responsibility as a father. Since its release on March 13, ‘Adolescence’ has garnered acclaim from audiences and critics alike for its writing, direction, and performances.

Even UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer acknowledged the show’s significance, sharing that he watched it with his teenage children and advocated for its screening in schools and Parliament.
