Khushi Kapoor and Ibrahim Ali Khan’s film ‘Nadaaniyan’ premiered on Netflix on March 7. The cast also includes Mahima Chaudhary, Suniel Shetty, Jugal Hansraj, Dia Mirza, and Archana Puran Singh in prominent roles. Since its debut, the film has faced significant backlash for its lackluster storyline. Critics and viewers alike have criticized both the plot and the dialogue, with Kapoor and Khan also receiving scrutiny for their performances. In light of this criticism, filmmaker Karan Johar has finally spoken out.

At the trailer launch of his upcoming project, ‘Akaal,’ Karan Johar addressed the negative feedback directed at ‘Nadaaniyan.’ When asked by an interviewer about the backlash, he responded, “I have just one thing to say: there’s a famous line from an old film that goes, ‘People will always talk; it’s their job to do so… let go of unnecessary chatter before the night slips away.’”

He elaborated on the film’s reception, stating, “My relationship with critics doesn’t shift based on their reviews. That’s their job. I don’t subscribe to any conspiracy theory suggesting they deliberately aim to diminish the film’s success. Sometimes, trolls express their displeasure. They are often anonymous, poor souls who are projecting their own issues onto us. I can only feel pity for them.”

Karan further criticized the overly harsh language used in some reviews, saying, “I genuinely respect all critics. However, certain remarks are troubling because they forget that these filmmakers have families who read these comments. A critic once said they wanted to ‘kick’ the film. I take issue with comments like that.”

Wrapping up his thoughts on the criticism, Karan referred to other film titles, earning enthusiastic applause from the audience. “I have no issue with critics. You have your opinions, which we accept. We too have our moments of folly, and there are times we delve deep into emotions. But when such harsh comments arise, it reflects more on you than on the film.”

‘Nadaaniyan’ was produced by Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment, with Shauna Gautam directing. Set in an elite Delhi school, the story follows Khushi Kapoor as a wealthy girl who hires a fake boyfriend to mend her friendships. Meanwhile, Ibrahim Ali Khan makes his debut as a scholarship student posing as her for-hire boyfriend. Their contrasting worlds lead to a series of comedic chaos. The film is currently streaming on Netflix.
