Kangana Ranaut criticizes the film industry and its biases following praise for ‘Emergency’
In a recent interview with India TV, Kangana addressed Sanjay Gupta’s comments, stating, “He acknowledged his preconceived notions in his post. Why attempt to understand me if you’re failing to do so? He admits to his failure. Holding onto negative assumptions about someone and wishing for their failure is misguided. How can you predict my actions or grasp my potential? To see someone from a broader perspective, you must have an expansive understanding of that individual. What credentials do you have to evaluate my intellect? What type of films do you create?”
Continuing her critique, she emphasized, “I urge those in the film industry to avoid preconceived notions about me based on their own film-making experiences. If they stop assuming limitations about my capabilities, perhaps they won’t face such embarrassment.”
For context, Sanjay Gupta recently took to X, praising ‘Emergency’ with a candid admission: “Today I watched EMERGENCY by @KanganaTeam. To be honest, I wasn’t planning on watching it due to my own prejudgments. I’m so glad I was mistaken. What an incredible film—both in terms of performance and direction. Top notch and world class.”
He later tweeted:
“Today I watched EMERGENCY by @KanganaTeam
Very frankly, I wasn’t planning to as I had prejudged it.
I am so glad that I was wrong.
What a fantastic film by Kangana—both performance and direction. Top notch & world class.”

Kangana responded to his tweet, stating, “The film industry needs to break free from its biases and acknowledge quality work. Thank you for overcoming those barriers, Sanjay ji—the barriers of preconceived notions. My message to all in the industry is simple: don’t attempt to understand me. I’m beyond your reach.”
‘Emergency’ explores the politically charged environment of India’s 1970s Emergency period, offering insights into a significant moment in the country’s socio-political history. Initially set for release on September 6, 2024, the film faced delays due to certification issues and criticism from Sikh organizations regarding its portrayal of their community.
The film finally premiered in theaters on January 17, with Kangana not only starring but also directing and co-producing. It features prominent actors such as Anupam Kher, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, and the late Satish Kaushik in significant roles.
