Kajol Honors Late Uncle Deb Mukherjee with a Touching Tribute
Accompanying her message was a nostalgic photo from one of their treasured Durga Puja celebrations. Kajol reflected, “It was tradition for us to take pictures together every Durga Puja, all dressed up and looking our best. I’m still coming to grips with the reality of a world without him. To one of the most remarkable men I’ve ever known—rest in peace. You will always be loved, remembered, and missed every single day of my life. #debumukherji #youareloved.”
The poignant post resonated with both fans and fellow industry members, who extended their condolences and support to the grieving actress.
Deb Mukherjee was not just Kajol’s uncle; he was a significant figure in the illustrious Mukherjee-Samarth family, a lineage that has greatly influenced Indian cinema for over four generations. Born in Kanpur, he was the son of filmmaker Sashadhar Mukherjee, the founder of Filmalaya Studios, renowned for classics such as ‘Love in Shimla’ (1960).
His mother, Satidevi Mukherjee, was the sister of iconic actors Ashok Kumar, Anup Kumar, and Kishore Kumar. Deb’s family also included popular 1960s actor Joy Mukherjee and filmmaker Shomu Mukherjee, who married veteran actress Tanuja, making Deb the uncle to both Kajol and her sister, Tanishaa.
Deb Mukherjee had a successful career in Bollywood, contributing to films such as ‘Sambandh’, ‘Adhikar’, ‘Zindagi Zindagi’, ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’, and ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’. Though he stepped back from the limelight in his later years, his legacy in Indian cinema is truly significant.
His influence continued with the next generation; his daughter Sunita, from his first marriage, is married to acclaimed director Ashutosh Gowariker, famous for films like ‘Lagaan’ and ‘Swades’. Additionally, his son from his second marriage, Ayan Mukerji, has gained recognition as the director of ‘Wake Up Sid’, ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, and ‘Brahmāstra’. The Mukherjee-Samarth family tree also features talented performers like Rani Mukerji and Sharbani Mukherjee.
